Submission + - Full Disk Encryption Solutions

An anonymous reader writes: I need a full disk encryption solution for Windows XP. It should preferably be free (gratis and libre) but more importantly it should strong encryption, a proven track record and not a complete resource hog.

I've taken a look at some solutions and they either seem enterpriseish or really expensive, e.g. Pointsec. FREE CompuSec, however, seems like a gratis alternative, but I can't tell how good it is.

Submission + - Will JavaFX Trump Ajax and Flash

An anonymous reader writes: The single biggest announcement of JavaOne this year was Chris Oliver's JavaFX Script, a declarative language for writing Flash-like rich Internet applications. Equally important, the Java virtual machine is opening up to scripting languages like Ruby, Groovy, and Scala. This will enable it to enter new domains that were previously the fiefdom of scripting languages like Python and Perl. JavaFX Script is a step into the rich Internet application domain pioneered by the Java platform but more recently colonized by Flash and Ajax.

Submission + - Good Service -- Bad Software (humanized.com)

Anonymous Coward writes: "Open source software is generally painful to setup and maintain. And it's likely to stay that way because it's open source. Of course, I could hire someone to set it up for me. That's what the service-oriented market is all about. I can get my software for free, try it out, and pay someone for support when I run into trouble. But there's something nagging... setting up sendmail (or qmail, or any of the half-dozen email solutions I've tried) shouldn't be as hard as it is. Why, over the numerous years — as it's been worked on by a brilliant body of hackers — has it remained so obtuse? Read more..."

Submission + - Patient bleeds dark green blood

jefft0 writes: A team of Canadian surgeons got a shock when the patient they were operating on began shedding dark greenish-black blood. The man emulated Star Trek's Mr Spock — the Enterprise's science officer who supposedly had green Vulcan blood. In this case, the unusual color of the 42-year-old's blood was due to the migraine medication he was taking.

Submission + - Warnings from the FDA for two diabetes drugs (dogflu.ca)

firesquirt writes: From an article at dogflu. http://www.dogflu.ca/06102007/21/black_box_warning s_for_diabetes_drugs The FDA has sent letters to the makers of two popular diabetes drugs Avandia and Actos, requesting that they be given black box warnings due to a link between them and congestive heart failure The FDA has sent letters to the makers of two popular diabetes drugs Avandia and Actos, requesting that they be given black box warnings due to a link between them and congestive heart failure It is being reported that two diabetes drugs have received black box warnings from the FDA due to an increased risk of congestive heart failure in diabetics who take them. The drugs that will receive black box warnings are Avandia made by GlaxoSmithKline, and Actos which is made by Takeda Pharmaceutical Co. FDA Commissioner Andrew von Eschenbach stated that the FDA had sent letters to the makers of the two drugs, requesting that black box warnings be added to their labels. The warnings are meant to "more prominently address the risks of congestive heart failure associated with the use of these drugs in certain patients." The black box warnings are in response to recent studies that were made public that showed that Avandia use put a patient at a 43% increase of having a heart attack, and an increased risk of congestive heart failure. "Avandia is a case study of the need for reform of our drug safety laws," said Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif. "FDA needs the will, the resources and the authority to be a more effective watchdog of drug safety."

Submission + - Paul McCartney on music in the digital world

Rachhpal writes: "Paul McCartney, ex-Beatles member, will release his new album today, "Memory Almost Full". In an interview with L.A. Times, he indicated ending his long time relationship with EMI and making his album fully downloadable through his new relationship with Starbucks' new Hear Music Label. http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/la-ca-mc cartney3jun03,1,1265126.story?track=rss&ctrack=2&c set=true Some of his comments on the music industry currently from the interview: "I was bored with the old record company's jaded view," McCartney says, ..... "They're very confused, and they will admit it themselves: that this is a new world, and they're a little bit at a loss as to what to do. So they've got millions of dollars and X budget ... for them to come up with boring ways — because they've been at it for so long — to what they call 'market' it. And I find that all a bit disturbing."

Submission + - Reiser Murder Trial Gets Under Way

Frosty Piss writes: "The murder trial for Hans Reiser gets under way Monday in the disappearance of his wife Nina Reiser, a 31-year-old mother of two missing since September, and defense lawyers are trying to sow doubt about whether she is dead at all. The defense attorneys have suggested that Nina Reiser may be alive in her native Russia, where she lived until 1999, and that purported family ties to a Russian spy agency and organized crime may be connected to her disappearance. Prosecutors have argued that, even without a body, the physical evidence they have uncovered clearly implicates Hans Reiser. Bloodstains in Hans Reiser's house and car matched Nina Reiser's DNA, police said. Investigators searching Hans Reiser's Honda CRX after his wife's disappearance found trash bags, masking tape, absorbent towels and a floorboard soaked with water, and the car was missing its passenger seat."
