I remember I reacted the same way when Disney took over Pixar, but in retrospect that didn't end up too horribly (although the latest Cars sequel is Disney-scary ...). Anyway, the "don't break it"-quote shows that EA execs are aware of the risks, so maybe there's some small hope they won't completely fuck up PopCap?

You're right, he'd probably be alive now. But if widely available intel had forced the government to be more open when we started our underhanded weaponizing and financing of his organization in the first place, he'd probably have been relatively harmless in the grand scheme of things.

I know which of these alternative realities I would choose to live in ...

Every day I'm happier I have an ipod touch to do i-stuff with, and a plain ole VM pay as you go phone for that old fashioned "telephone call" functionality. The coolest part is when I drain the ipod battery from screwing around with music / videos / games, I can still do the important stuff like make and receive phone calls. I know people whom absolutely squeal when angry birds fly off with their battery charge and then they can't talk on the phone or text for a couple hours. Lately I've been facetiming thru open wifis instead of making phone calls on my old fashioned cellphone, if everyone I knew did facetime, I'd probably ditch the phone entirely.

I considered modding you +1 funny for making such a good argument and then completely contradicting yourself with your last words, but then I decided to be nice about it and just mock you publicly instead.

Looks to me like they were right, the damage was to stuff outside the reactor which was mostly superficial.

From Wikipedia:

"An explosion was heard after 06:14 JST on 15 March in unit 2, possibly damaging the pressure-suppression system, which is at the bottom part of the containment vessel."

"On 30 March, Japan's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency (JNISA) reiterated concerns about a possible unit 2 breach at either the suppression pool, or the reactor vessel."

"On 27 March, TEPCO reported measurements of very high radiation levels of over 1000 mSv/h in the basement of the unit 2 turbine building"

And the money quote: (source)

"On April 11, the Japanese Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency officially raised the disaster at Fukushima Daiichi to Level 7 on the INES scale. This makes Fukushima the second Level 7 "major accident" in the history of the nuclear industry."

Graphics mean NOTHING. Not even worthy of mention. Not even an "it doesn't even look good", like that's the last saving grace of a crap game.

I strongly disagree. Top-rate graphics is a large component of the strange magic that lifts a game from 'very good' to 'absolutely f*cking brilliant'. BUT the graphics don't have to be pretty in the conventional sense, as long as they have *charm*.

Minecraft graphics has charm. World of Goo graphics has charm. Plants vs Zombies graphics has charm.

The have so much charm they become stunningly beautiful, just like a certain girl I know.

Well, there are (almost) no devices that are more efficient at heating. Light bulbs are 90% efficient at that. Heaters can reach 99%, but try finding a 40W heater..

There are 40W heaters on the market that are 100% efficient. They're called light bulbs.

What do you think (eventually) happens to the 10% of energy emitted by the bulb as light? Heat.

(And yes, this means that you may as well use ordinary light bulbs during winter in an electrically heated house. You can even leave them on all night, it's free as long as your heating is on.)

Yes, it's just a variant of Monte Carlo, but don't knock it. Recent programs implementing the algorithm have improved their handicaps by up to 5 stones, which is huge. The top bots at the KGS Go server are now ranked up to 4 dan (like a good amateur player) in games against humans.

You may want to read this short article in the Guardian about these recent improvements in the MoGo go bot. In October 2009 (6 months after this article appeared) a version of MoGo finally beat a top-ranking (9 dan) professional in an even game on a 9x9 board.
