Submission + - Lenovo CEO Gives $3M Bonus To Employees (theverge.com)

damn_registrars writes: "Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanqing received a $3,000,000 bonus for the healthy finances of his company this past year. The bonus is not unusual for top executives, however what he did was. Yuanqing gave the entire $3M to lower-level employees (including on the assembly line) at Lenovo. For some of the employees, he gave them the equivalent of another month's pay.
Yuanqing receives an annual salary of $14M, so he won't be poor without the bonus by anyone's measure. However his giving away the $3M bonus was not something that many other CEOs have opted for in recent memory."

Submission + - When Did Facebook Become So Uncool? (cnn.com)

damn_registrars writes: "For a while, everyone wanted to talk about facebook. Vendors were beating paths to set up sites there for themselves. The site was making more money than they seemed to know what to do with.

Now, people are moving away from it. Not necessarily to google plus or anything else, just simply away from facebook. They've had a few significant blunders in the eyes of the public, and this article outlines them and how they have managed to rather quickly move facebook from being very cool to being very uncool.

And it doesn't even mention that your grandmother's wall has more comments than yours."

Submission + - Stanford Researcher Uses Himself as Guinea Pig for Real Time Genomics (cell.com)

damn_registrars writes: "As sequencing and purification technologies have rapidly improved over the years, genomics (and related sciences such as transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics) have bcome practical not only on larger scales of sample numbers but also on shorter time frames. Stanford researcher Michael Snyder, head of a research group, made himself a test subject for exactly this kind of work. Over a time course, Snyder had his genome sequenced and assembled, while also having RNA and protein levels monitored over time. Amongst other findings, this was the first time a genomics experiment was done before, during, and after a rhinovirus (common cold) infection to see the genetic response. Oh, and they found Dr. Snyder to be predisposed to type II diabetes, before his physician had noticed any clinical signs.

This article is non-paywalled, and should be available for anyone to download directly from the journal Cell."

Submission + - The North Carolina Non-Troversy Over A Preschool Lunch (ordinary-gentlemen.com)

damn_registrars writes: "Slashdot was fooled in to placing conservative spin on the front page regarding a preschool girl whose lunch was not taken away from her and forcibly substituted with chicken nuggets by her school. The attached article shows where the spin came from, and what the truth of the matter actually is. Slashdot apologizes for failing to read in to what they posted to the front page."

Submission + - Draft Genome of Marijuana Completed (genomeweb.com)

damn_registrars writes: "This week it was announced that a draft of the marijuana genome has been completed. Currently the group responsible for the effort — and you might not be surprised to know some of the work was done in Amsterdam — has thousands of reads available and estimates the genome size at around 400 million base pairs. By comparison the human genome is usually stated to be around 3 billion, and a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arabidopsis_thaliana">commonly used scientific model weed is estimated at around a third the genome size of marijuana.

The portion of the draft pot genome currently available consists of just the raw reads — the assembly has not been made public yet. The leader of the initiative — a group launched under the name medicinal genomics — is known for also contributing to the technology behind one of the current gene sequencing instruments."

Submission + - Caltech Scientists Measure Dinosaur Body Temp (rdmag.com)

damn_registrars writes: "Using rare isotope ratios, a geology team at CalTech has determined body temperatures of sauropod dinosaurs. Their work finds temperatures that are roughly in line with modern mammals for body temperature. However, as the authors point out, this does not on its own confirm dinosaurs to be entirely warm-blooded, as they may have kept these temperatures by sheer mass.

The peer-reviewed paper is available online in PNAS, as they are NIH-supported, you can also get the article free through pubmed."

Submission + - Weird Al Rejected By Lady Gaga over Parody Request (wordpress.com)

damn_registrars writes: "Or, maybe not. In an Weird Al's WordPress Site it appears now that Lady Gaga has herself approved the parody — it seems to have been originally rejected by someone who was "representing" the artist. Weird Al credits the internet support for bringing the light to it. I for one was looking forward to seeing an new outbreak of the Streisand Effect..."

Submission + - Problem-solving Bacteria Crack Sudoku (newscientist.com)

damn_registrars writes: "From the can-your-bugs-do-this dept:
A team of researchers from the University of Tokyo, Japan have developed a way to employ e coli bacteria towards solving a puzzle that many Americans struggle at — Sudoku. Current implementations can handle 4x4 grids, but a full 9x9 grid could be done with some additional modifications.
The TSA responded proactively by stating that no matter how much you may struggle with the Sudoku on the airline magazine, you are still not allowed to bring vials of bacteria on to the aircraft with you."

Submission + - Dell Offers A Unique Accessory (dell.com)

damn_registrars writes: "A recent visit to the Dell Accessory Page alerted me to a new option that I had not seen before. I happened upon this when looking at CPU options for existing Dell workstations, although it was sold through the Accessories part of the catalog. While the price is a bit steep, the one review they have up there currently seems to indicate it to be a bargain!"

Submission + - Neandertal Genome Sequenced

damn_registrars writes: "The first draft of the genome for the Neandertal has been released. The genome will be detailed in the next issue of the journal Science. Preliminary results from comparing genes between Neandertal and Homo Sapiens genomes indicates that only limited interbreeding occurred between the two species. More information in Science Magazine The Neandertal Genome."

Submission + - Scientists Develop Nanoscale Mass Spectrometer

damn_registrars writes: Mass spectrometry is often applied to determine accurate mass of very small molecules. However, most instruments currently availbale are themselves very large in size and require a fair amount of sample to determine the accurate mass of the molecule in question. An article published in Nature Nanotechnology describes the development of a much smaller mass spectrometer. This instrument is based on the implementation of naoelectromechanical system (NEMS) resonators, which can respond to single atoms in proportion to the mass of the atom. This dramatically reduces both the size of the instrument as well as the size of the sample required.
