Mass spectrometry is often applied to determine accurate mass of very small molecules. However, most instruments currently availbale are themselves very large in size and require a fair amount of sample to determine the accurate mass of the molecule in question. An article published in Nature Nanotechnology describes the development of a much smaller mass spectrometer. This instrument is based on the implementation of naoelectromechanical system (NEMS) resonators, which can respond to single atoms in proportion to the mass of the atom. This dramatically reduces both the size of the instrument as well as the size of the sample required.

Turtles have a rather unique body plan amongst vertebrates; aside from the obvious shell, the carapace is displaced as are the shoulder girdles. The fossil record is generally lacking in ancestral species that lie between turles and other reptiles; so much of what we know about turtle development comes from study extant species. In a recent issue of the journal Science, the developmental patterns of turtle embryo development are studied.

Retailer Ritz Camera filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection today. The privately-held chain has stores in 40 states and also has a chain of boating supply stores. Speculation is that the combination of the widespread consumer switch towards digital photography, coupled with the tendency for Ritz to open locations in malls, is a significant part of their downturn. Ritz operates under the names Ritz Camera, Wolf Camera, Kits Cameras, Inkley's, and The Camera Shops, depending on the market. Ritz was also known for buying up smaller regional camera chains as part of their expansion strategy for moving into new markets. Ritz said is has between $100 million and $500 million of both assets and liabilities.

Many print newspapers are having financial difficulties currently. Layoffs and budget freezes have been seen in numerous papers and some are speculated to be near bankruptcy. The New York Times, in an effort to correct its own financial situation, recently accepted a $250,000,000 loan from Mexican Billionaire Carlos Slim. Slim is the richest man in Mexico, and some may recall that he was the head of the investment group that bought and owned CompUSA before its recent bankruptcy and sale to Tiger Direct.

IBM and Canonical announced today a bundle with Lotus desktop applications running on top of Ubuntu Linux. According to IBM, prices per desktop start at $59, including $10 for Ubuntu Linux support.
Some see this as an attempt by IBM to influence the dominating position that Microsoft currently has on the desktop software market, by offering both an operating system and an office suite for less than the usual Microsoft Tax.
