Submission + - Rooting or Openness? (blogspot.com)

jamlam writes: The Android developers blog has a comment from their dev team on the recent 'rooting' of their Nexus S phones. It contains a call from Google to handset manufacturers to open up their phones to give users choice, but will this ever happen in a market dominated by lock-em-down cellular networks?

aligator007 writes: The biggest scare for the decade is will the world end in 2012? Well let’s break down 5 possible reasons why it will not be the end of the World. Remember the Y2K scare? Submission + - WikiLeaks Starts Mass Mirroring Site (wikileaks.ch)

A beautiful mind writes: WikiLeaks is asking for hosting space on unix-based servers. The replication is implemented by a rsync+ssh based push that copies static files to a known path, authenticated via the private half of this public key. The complete website is a few GB in size, making it feasible to replicate on a large scale. The mirror list will be published when the number of independent mirrors reaches 50.

Submission + - Firefox auto-disables Bing bar toolbar- for safety (imageshack.us) 3

jr0dy writes: I just launched Firefox for the first time today, and was greeted with the add-on dialog which informed me that the Bing Bar had been installed, but that it had been "Disabled for [my] protection." This is awesome. Anyone else have this happen to them? Is Mozilla actually taking action on Microsoft's evilness?

This is just a few days following Mozilla exec Asa Dotzler's calling out of Microsoft for this very practice: http://apple.slashdot.org/story/10/11/29/1539257/Apple-Microsoft-Google-Attacked-For-Evil-Plugins

This is actually a good result. Having worked at a UK solicitors (IANAL, I was in IT, this is Slashdot after all...) I know that pretty much the only thing they are scared of is the SRA. Every practising legal firm in the UK requires a license from these guys, no license = no firm, and hopefully this is what will result here.

LittleBigPlanet Sequel Already In the Works 27

Now that the delay caused by a rogue song has come and passed, the LittleBigPlanet servers have been turned on, and creations are beginning to filter in. A BBC feature on the game revealed that plans are already underway for a sequel. Another report suggests that they're looking at other methods for expanding the game as well: "With the game just hitting stores, it's too early to start talking about sequels, but Media Molecule already is looking into how they can get more creative tools into the hands of their users. 'We can release new levels, new stickers, new content,' Evans said. 'It's pretty clear to me that we have to move in a fluid direction about what's a sequel and what's not a sequel.'"
