Microsoft Zunes Committing Mass Suicide 785

jddeluxe writes "There are multiple reports springing up all over the internet of a mass suicide of Microsoft 30GB Zune players globally. Check Zune forums, Gizmodo, or other such sites; the reports are spreading rapidly, except apparently to the Microsoft official Zune site."

Wikipedia Almost Reaches $6 Million Target 412

An anonymous reader noted a story discussing the aftermath of the Wikipedia fundraiser and says "The writer suggests that Wikipedia can earn $50-100 million a month by a simple text ad. He also suggests that contributors should be financially rewarded and that the lack of financial reward is the reason why 98.3% of registered Wikipedia users are inactive. What do you think? Should Wikimedia Foundation put ads on Wikipedia? Should contributors be financially rewarded? What compensation structure would be best?" Personally I think the independence of Wikipedia is great, and any advertising would not only compromise that integrity, but give contributors a sense of entitlement that the site is better off without.

NASA will last exactly as long as the American people are willing to keep spending money...

I agree, it seems to me that if NASA quite whining about tiny budgets and actually started working on cutting edge projects, a la Apollo, they might drum up some public and maybe some private enthusiasm and thus some more cash.

Why are they just just rehashing the same missions with different names and vehicles?

Does any one have any insight on the legality of using the file sharing network itself to catch the "offenders"

To me it seems like a type of entrapment, which is not a valid way for law enforcement to gather evidence. I realize that the user did put the file out there in a share folder, but there is no evidence of distributing except to MediaSentry, who then informs their client of the offense.

perhaps my real question here is, how can the RIAA grant selected immunity to MediaSentry to "pirate" their product? Also, how can the file downloaded by MediaSentry be considered an illegal share if permission was granted to them to gather it by any means?

I would have to agree, I hate the way they always seem to appear right where I need to interact with the program I am using. Or if you accidentally move your mouse over it, they stay on screen for ever thinking you are actually paying attention to them.

British Royal Navy Submarines Now Run Windows 725

meist3r writes "On his Government blog, Microsoft's Ian McKenzie announced today that the Royal Navy was ahead of schedule for switching their nuclear submarines to a customized Microsoft Windows solution dubbed 'Submarine Command System Next Generation (SMCS NG)' which apparently consists of Windows 2000 network servers and XP workstations. In the article, it is claimed that this decision will save UK taxpayers £22m over the next ten years. The installation of the new system apparently took just 18 days on the HMS Vigilant. According to the BAE Systems press release from 2005, the overall cost of the rollout was £24.5m for all eleven nuclear submarines of the Vanguard, Trafalgar and Swiftsure classes. Talk about staying with the sinking ship."

Your rationalization of COBOL being Islam are incorrect. Islam is actually the youngest of the three major Abrahamic religions, the others being Judaism and Christianity. In fact, those three religions act like a Russian nesting doll, each containing the fundamentals of the previous iterations and adding new ideas. So the statement that COBOL has been around a long time would imply that it would be Judaism instead of Islam. To be fair though, I don't know nearly enough about COBOL to make a more accurate pick.
It's funny. Laugh.

If Programming Languages Were Religions 844

bshell writes "With Christmas around the corner I know we are all thinking about religion, or at least maybe wondering why this one religion dominates the rest for these few weeks. A fellow named Rodrigo Braz Monteiro (amz) posted this list comparing each programming language to a religion. Guaranteed to make you chuckle and generate a good long thread here on slashdot. Great way to pass the time as work winds down this week and we relate to our own programming faiths during this very special time of year. Merry PHPmas." Fortunately Pastafarianism is referenced.
