Comment My experience (Score 1) 403

I assume that by ‘monkey work’ your boss means the coding itself and not any of the design. If that isn’t what he means, then that has already been covered.
I outsourced several small custom add-on components for our core application. These components were not going to be used by any other customers and were not going to be included in the main product. I don’t know why you would outsource your core development – also already covered here. But if you are set on outsourcing, here is my advice:

1. Develop a specification with all features and functions clearly defined.
2. Design the database schema (or whatever data storage design you need).
3. Prototype every screen. Create full up screens (even if they are just images) with the same controls on them that you want to see in the product.
4. Spell out every user input and result for every screen.
5. Establish the platforms – all development tools, OS’s and languages should be spelled out up front.
6. Review often – catch problems as soon as possible.
7. Document every variance. If they can’t do something the way you wanted it, document it and the agreement you came to.
8. Pay for feature completion, not hours.
9. Protect your Intellectual Property.

Decaf - Gave up coffee with caffeine years ago after finding out that one of the (effective) ingredients in migraine medication was caffeine - Everything from Caffergot to Excedrin Migraine. But... If I already ha plenty of caffeine in my system from drinking coffee, it didn't help much. Now without caffeine, a hot cup of Joe poured over that migraine is very effective and cutting it off! Jeff

Really? Really? You don't know why Microsoft embraced gaming? Haven't you figured it out yet? Microsoft made zillion$ in operating systems and application software. Did they need a game or game console, NO! But the US military did. They started with Bungie and the Mac thinking they would prepare a small select group, but it wasn't enough. So they enlisted Microsoft to take it to the next level and get it out there on a game console. Oh, yea, now do you get it?
IT'S NOT A GAMING CONSOLE, IT'S A TRAINING SIMULATION!
They are trying to prepare us for the day when the Covenant get here! Urban combat, space combat, huge tracts of devastation, get it? GET IT?
THE COVENENT ARE COMING AND THEY ARE BRINGING THE FLOOD!!!! I'm going to be ready. I've trained in the simulations again and again. I've read all the mission reports. I'll be READY. I have my shotgun! AAAAAAAAAA! No, NO! Leave me alone. You're not turnin' me into one of those things! AAAAAAA!!!!!!!

Comment Re:Terminal velocity? (Score 3, Informative) 222

Terminal velocity is calculated as sqrt((2*w)/(rho*A*Cd)).
w = weight
rho = about 1.22 kgm**3
A = Things fall in the orientation that causes the most air resistance (believe it or not) so that's the face area, about .07 ft**2
Cd = Coefficient of drag for a rectangle is about .75

So terminal velocity is about 50 MPH.

Bill and Melinda Gates are investing $2 million to develop the technology. Don't schools already have a Facebook like application for social networking called "Facebook"?

Like Scott Shoemaker http://www.ageofautism.com/2007/07/chelation-and-t.html. I happen to know Scott and Josh. His story is anecdotal, I admit. But the effect of treatment on his son is a matter of fact, not up for interpretation. I saw a boy who spun in circles and rolled his eyes constantly. Who could not talk to his parents and was afraid of his little sister. After his treatment, he was (and still is) quite normal. How did Josh get Autism? I don't know. Did he have Autism? Don't know that either. Did he have heavy metal poisoning? If you look up the symptoms you'll see they are quite similar. I know this is unpopular among the slashdot crowd, but it is an accurate accounting of a real life incident.
