Hi, Do not worry, We already know what mining can do, remember, we had the biggest silver mine in the world, and were one of three tin biggest providers in the world. But Morales is nof looking for any good thing for bolivian campesinos, he is just looking how to stay in the government, just like Castro did. He wants to stay there forever, campesinos are just being used to achieve that. that is just soooo sad. I am bolivian, living in Bolivia

Submission + - Microsoft vs. OpenOffice.org file compatibility. (lineone.net) 4

TangoCharlie writes: "Since OpenOffice.org first released a free suite of office applications, I have been trying to get the various organisations to switch away from Microsoft Office. The argument against using OpenOffice.org has always been that it isn't 100% Microsoft Office compatible. However, it has been several years since Microsoft released Office 2007, and invariably if I send someone an docx or xlsx file they email back to me and ask me to send it in Office97-2003 format. My somewhat rhetorical question is, which Office suite now boasts the best "compatibility"? MS Office or OpenOffice.org?"

Submission + - Securely and remotely open and close a firewall (go2linux.org)

ggarron writes: "Knockd is a daemon, that lets you open the firewall for you to go in, from any IP in the world, if you know the "magic words" (read magic ports) and the close it again, once you are in.
This way you can securely access you server from any remote site in the world, without having to let the door open."

Submission + - Last.fm to start charging international users (mashable.com) 2

tdobson writes: "The popular online radio service, Last.fm, has announced that users outside of the UK, USA and Germany will need to start paying 3.00 (about $4.40 USD/£2.80 GBP) per month to continue streaming music on their service.

Last.fm doesn't offer much of a reason as to the change, other than writing on their blog that "There will be a 30 track free trial, and we hope this will convince people to subscribe and keep listening to the radio"

Already, there appears to be quite a backlash in responses so far, amongst subscribers and non-subscribers of all nationalities — has this killed Last.fm's appeal, globally?"

Submission + - Windows 7 vs Vista vs Linux Benchmarks (tuxradar.com)

MegaMac writes: So Windows 7 is supposed to be screaming fast, right? Anecdotal accounts report it booting quicker and feeling snappier than Vista, but the proof is in stats. TuxRadar has benchmarked Windows 7 against Vista and Ubuntu Linux, comparing install time, disk space usage, boot speeds and filesystem performance. The graphs also show how the sparkly ext4 filesystem compares against its older brother.

Go2Linux writes: "After years, actually 15 years Netscape is going to die in February 2008, this browser made the Internet what Internet is today, Microsoft with its killed it, including IE on all their Windows versions. This is an article with a little of history and a little of tribute to this great piece of software. Check the article here"

Google Apps Slow to Replace Competition 144

ericatcw brings us a Computerworld article about how businesses are still hesitant to switch to Google Apps as an alternative to Microsoft Office. While a Google spokesman claims "millions of active users", only "several thousand organizations" have paid for the Premier service, which was launched earlier this year. From Computerworld: "'If we deploy it correctly, Google Docs can replace some [of] our Office apps -- but not all of them,' said Les Sease, IT director of Prudential Carolina Real Estate in North Charleston, South Carolina. Sease would like to switch everyone over completely to Google Apps. But first he would like to see better synchronization between Google Apps and mobile devices, shared online file storage similar to that of Apple Inc.'s .Mac, as well as a simple desktop publishing tool similar to Microsoft Publisher."

Submission + - Making the web better through social resourcing

An anonymous reader writes: Trading sites like Freecycle have been gaining traction. It's a great use of the web. Now we're seeing new sites come up targeting even more specific niches like textbooks for college students and personal and small business loans.

What business models can these "social service" sites use to survive in addition to ads, affiliate marketing, etc. There's no doubt that these sites help make the web a better place...but in order to continue they need to sustain themselves. So what are some new ways that this can be done?

Submission + - OS Battle, Should a company battle not users' one (go2linux.org)

ggarron writes: "When someone did an OS comparison, the users start defending one or the other, but this usually is a defense with the heart rather that one with the head. We the Linux users should let those things to the marketing area of companies like Microsoft and Canonical, and focused us on the community, and even better in helping each others as it once used to be, no matter which Distribution of Linux the other guy prefer."

Submission + - DSL Down completely (dslreports.com)

grey580 writes: "Not sure if anyone has noticed but the AT&T DNS servers have gone down for the entire SouthEast.
People from Louisiana to Miami have DNS timeouts.
I'm not sure if the outage is a server meltdown/DDoS/DNS hack.
But even the AT&T Fast Access help line is so overloaded it's just returning a busy signal.
Tried calling the operator so I could connect but no go. She said that the line has been busy all nite.
Luckily enough if you are having this issue using an open dns server seems to do the trick and get you back up and surfing."

Submission + - Ubuntu Linux vs Windows Vista: The Desktop Battle (polishlinux.org)

michuk writes: "It may be a brave opinion but I predict that Ubuntu Linux and Windows Vista are going to be the two operating systems that will take over the largest chunk of the desktop OS market during the next couple of years. This comparison is based on my experience with both systems during the last couple of weeks on two different computers."
