The client you linked to is about 10 years old. It offers "integration of legacy systems with Windows 2000," and comes in attractive beige plastic. It even carries a Win___ name! Considering that a throwaway cellphone you get from Verizon has about twice as much CPU power as this thing, it's definitely not "cheap" for $100.

...shit bitch motherfucker.

You've missed the point. Ubuntu has no crapware, so if the crapware paid for the hardware then wouldn't the hardware with Ubuntu be more expensive? There's no crapware on Ubuntu. It comes completely clean, save for Adobe Reader (which is not ENTIRELY crapware - it works just fine for reading PDF). The Windows version comes with the usual slew of useless shit (including Reader and MUCH more). Windows alone is $50 more. An identical laptop with Windows and crapware is $50 more. The crapware included with Windows, therefore, does not factor into the price.

Feminists can't take a joke. The problem is not that feminists can't take a joke. (We can.) The problem is that you can't take feminists seriously.

I don't quite follow your logic. I don't see anything outright wrong with your claims here, but they don't seem to fit coherently. It's hard not to sound like a troll saying this, but, "what?"

First Algae Car Attempts To Cross the US On 25 Gallons of Fuel 188

Mike writes "San Francisco recently saw the unveiling of the world's first algae fuel-powered vehicle, dubbed the Algaeus. The plug-in hybrid car, which is a Prius tricked out with a nickel metal hydride battery and a plug, runs on green crude from Sapphire Energy — no modifications to the gasoline engine necessary. The set-up is so effective, according to FUEL producer Rebecca Harrell, that the Algaeus can cross the US on approximately 25 gallons of fuel — a figure which is currently being tested on a coast-to-coast road trip."

Microsoft Launches Its Own Open Source Foundation 344

darthcamaro writes "Microsoft already had its own open source (OSI-approved) licenses, its own open source project hosting site and now it's adding its own non-profit open source foundation. That's right, the company that is still banging the patent drum against open source now has its own 501(c)(6) open source foundation. Officially called the CodePlex Foundation, it's a separate effort from the CodePlex site and is aimed at helping to get more commercial developers involved in open source. Considering how they continue to attack Linux and open source, will anyone take them seriously?"

Might be slightly OT (well, not relative to P/GP posts), but if this is a scheduler that will prioritize Rhythmbox's hard drive reads over my GIMP swapping, then I'm all for it. Nothing worse than having to turn off the music because your hard drive is being swapped to too much to... stream a 192kb/s mp3.

EMC Co-Founder Commits Suicide 538

The Register is reporting that EMC co-founder Richard Egan has committed suicide. The article has an interesting look back at some of his accomplishments. "Egan had an amazing life, encompassing involvement in the Apollo space program, the US Marines, starting and building the most successful storage company on the planet, and becoming the US ambassador to Ireland. Finally, aged 73 and facing a lingering death, he ended the battle decisively and on his terms. He was never a shrinking violet."

Linux Port For id's Tech 5 Graphics Engine Unlikely 461

DesiVideoGamer writes "John Carmack, the lead developer for id's Tech 5 graphics engine, does not plan on making a Linux port for the new engine. From his e-mail: 'It isn't out of the question, but I don't think we will be able to justify the work. If there are hundreds of thousands of Linux users playing Quake Live when we are done with Rage, that would certainly influence our decision.' One of the reasons for not making a Linux port was due to the fact that the new engine 'pushes a lot of paths that are not usually optimized' and that the Linux port would have to use the binary blob graphics driver in order to work."
