Comment Conduits everywhere. (Score 2) 557

Make sure that they run whatever cable you decide to run (ethernet, fiber, whatever) in conduit, ideally with junction boxes on a relatively regular basis (at bends, etc), so it is easy to draw new wire through when you need to.

Yes, the electrician will say "you don't need to do that; that's silly." Ignore him. Do it.

I just recently moved into a house with ethernet run through to all of the rooms from an access point in the basement. Unfortunately over the years some of the runs have deteriorated--but sadly, the ethernet wire was simply threaded through holes in the studs, making it virtually impossible to pull new wire through. Had it been drawn through relatively large conduit, and had there been boxes on a regular basis, it would take just a few minutes to draw a new wire.

That also goes for conduits where you may want to put a big screen TV on the wall, low voltage systems (like door bells), and other runs where you may want to add something new (like in-home speakers or whatever). I know it's impossible to plan for everything, but at least you'll have a fighting chance when some new technology comes around (or something in the wall breaks), that it can be easily replaced without having to tear up a whole lot of drywall.

If for some reason you are suggesting that we give up, that we might as well give all control to one party, all I can do is completely disagree

I agree with you that 3 is better than 2, and I definitely don't want to see 1. But I believe the whole system of giving anybody control is broken and wrong. Most of the powers the government has need to be eliminated - they were wrong when kings exercised them, it became slightly better (by some measures) when we started voting on people taking turns exercising them, and it might be slightly better if we had more choices on who to vote in for tyrant each term. But the ultimately solution is to not give those powers out at all.

People who demonize libertarianism always try and paint it to be anarchy. In reality, libertarian would be what the founders intended. Not what we have today, and not anarchy.

It's not really any use trying to convince them. People who love big government might object to things like the Patriot Act or the Disney Millennium Copyright Act because it infringes on their rights, but they just can't seem to grasp the fact that the government has the power to impose these kinds of things is the root problem. Even with a smaller, limited federal government, you'd still have your state, county, city/township/village, and school district governments to rule over you.

No, I'm in agreement with you here. As much as I don't buy from ThinkGeek anymore (unless they have a really, really wantable T-shirt on sale*...because I'm cheap as hell), having something akin to an Amazon Locker is a boon and a win for them.

It's a heck of a smart business strategy and it's going to be interesting (to me at least) to see how successful it is.

I love how tacking "internet" onto a law magically makes it different. Surely they could be even more redundant. Why not "The distribution of controlled substances intentionally accomplished while being a human" or "The distribution of controlled substances intentionally accomplished while intentionally using a computer on the internet while being a human"?

so it's not like Netflix is proposing a crazy new concept, ... why so angry bro?

I'd say nobody's ever served by having an angry outburst, but certainly those of us who have been enjoying adfree netflix viewing are bothered by the idea of ads being inserted. This is clearly a decrease in value and for many of us it may be enough to prompt us to look for alternatives.
