Submission + - Newzbin is back

carlosap writes: We are pleased to announce that Newzbin2 is now live and featuring unfiltered NZB Reports.

There are catches and we don't want you having too high expectations for now. To be blunt, we've been struggling to understand the site code & systems. The backend is way more complicated than we realised. Some of it is busted and some services we don't know how to operate fully yet. We are working hard but we thought, based on comments on the http://deepsharer.wordpress.com/ blog, that it would be better to run a partial Newzbin clone now rather than leave it for a couple of months until we do grok it all. Understand that things are likely to be a bit wobbly for a while and stuff may well fall over, but we hope to kick things into shape soon.

We dont have a functional payment system in place yet so the site will be free for a week or two. When we get a credits system running we will be respecting the credits you have left over from Newzbin.

Obviously we hope that you editor administrators and editors will remain with us as you are truly valuable: all users have the same status they did when Newzbin shut down as we didn't alter anything. Obviously if you no longer wish to be an editor your status can be changed.

We'll try and answer your questions in the comments.

Mr White/Team R Dogs

Requests for SSL support noted. We'll try top get this working ASAP.

One old editor has had a problem but I'm hoping he's all.

Newzxxx.com not yet working but we are on it.

editors: there seems to be an issue with some new report being set to a 'Frozen' status. Not sure what that's about yet. Looking at the issue but please keep creating reports and we'll manually unfreeze in the interim.

Actor Matt Smith Will Be 11th Doctor Who 330

Jerry Smith was among a large number of readers letting us know that the 11th Doctor Who has been named. It's Matt Smith, 26, who will be the youngest actor to play the time-traveling Doctor. The head of drama at BBC Wales said this about Smith's audition: "It was abundantly clear that he had that 'Doctor-ness' about him. You are either the Doctor or you are not."

Microsoft Issues Workaround For Zune Freeze 277

UnknowingFool writes "As a followup to the Zune New Year's Eve meltdown, Microsoft has issued a workaround for what some users have correctly guessed was a bug caused by a leap year. To recover from the problem, let the Zune drain the batteries and restart it after noon on January 1, 2009. Many sites are reporting that Microsoft has 'fixed' the issue, but technically all Microsoft has done is to ask users to wait out the conditions that triggered the bug. Unless a software patch comes out, Zunes will suffer the same problem again in four years." Reader ndtechnologies adds, "According to posts in the Toshiba forum at anythingbutipod.com, the same bug that shut down millions of Zune 30's also affects the Toshiba Gigabeat S. The Zune 30 is based off of the Gigabeat S series and was co-developed by Microsoft with Toshiba."

Nobel Winner Says Internet Might Have Stopped Hitler Screenshot-sm 290

There can be little doubt that the internet has changed everyday life for the better, but Nobel literature prize winner Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clezio has upped the ante by saying an earlier introduction of information technology could even have prevented World War II. "Who knows, if the Internet had existed at the time, perhaps Hitler's criminal plot would not have succeeded — ridicule might have prevented it from ever seeing the light of day," he said. I have to agree with him. If England had been able to send a "Stop Hitler Now!" petition to 10 friendly countries, those countries could have each sent it to 10 more friendly countries before the invasion of Poland, and one of history's greatest tragedies might have been averted.

Submission + - Nuclear War

Anonymous Coward writes: "Analysts are reporting today that President Putin has ordered Russia's strategic nuclear arsenal to 'high alert' over growing concerns of massive US military troop movements from North America towards the Middle East.

This latest war move by Putin mirrors his actions of previous weeks where he ordered Russian Military to move towards Eastern Europe, and as we had reported on in our November 9th report, "Putin Orders Troops To Border, War Crimes Trials For US Leaders".

Britain's Times Online News Service has, likewise, reported on Russia's latest move against the West by quoting Putin, and who stated:

"In violation of previous agreements, certain member countries of the NATO alliance are increasing their resources next to our borders. Russia cannot remain indifferent to this obvious muscle-flexing. One of the most important tasks remains raising the combat readiness of the strategic nuclear forces. They should be ready to deliver a quick and adequate reply to any aggressor."

Putin further warned the West that Russia would withdrawal from the landmark Conventional Forces in Europe (CFE) treaty on December 12th, to which the United States Military responded to by cancelling its planned drawdown of its Forces in Europe.

China has also moved against the United States Military by denying US Warships access to its ports, as reported by the Reuters News Service, and as we can read:

"China has refused permission for a U.S. aircraft carrier and accompanying vessels to visit Hong Kong for a long-planned Thanksgiving holiday visit, the U.S. State Department said on Wednesday. The Kitty Hawk group and its crew of 8,000 U.S. airmen and sailors had been expected in Hong Kong on Wednesday, but will now spend the holiday on the South China Sea."

Of the greatest concern to both Russia and China are the United States and European Unions planned recognition of the Serbian province of Kosovo, and to which the Serbs have responded by stating that if independence is declared it would mean war.

Known to Russian Military Analysts, however, is that the Americans plan towards Russia is to instigate a series of wars along Russia's borders in order to keep Russian Military Forces bogged down and unable to respond to the United States attempt to take over the entire oil rich Middle East.

Not being understood by the American people is that their War Leaders incredible plan to take over the Middle East, and its oil supply, must occur for the United States to able to survive. This is so because the price of oil is pegged to the US dollar, and which is currently collapsing on all of the Worlds markets resulting in the loss of countless billions to the West's major banking and insurance giants.

Iraq was the first of the Middle Eastern Nations to remove the US dollar as a peg to its price of oil, a move which prompted a swift military invasion of their country by the United States and its allies. Russia, Iran, Kuwait and Venezuela, though, have followed Iraq's lead in breaking with the US dollar, leaving Saudi Arabia standing alone among the World's oil powers still backing the Americans falling currency.

China, which has amassed over $1 Trillion in US dollar reserves, in attempting to reduce their holdings of American dollars, was met with a swift recall of billions of dollars worth of its products from the US marketplace, but which, according to their economic experts, they have been able to withstand.

Russia and China have also expressed their anger of the United States backing of some of the most corrupt Nations on Earth, including:

Georgia: Ruled by a dictator who declared a state of emergency, closed down all independent media and imprisoned all opposition leaders.

Pakistan: Ruled by a dictator who declared a state of emergency, closed down all independent media and imprisoned all opposition leaders.

Egypt: Which suspended democratic rule in favor of Mubarak's son becoming the new leaders, closing all independent media and imprisoning all opposition leaders and supporters.

Saudi Arabia: The World's most cruel theocracy that has crushed all opposition and independent media and denies all basic human rights to women.

Kosovo: A Serbian province ruled by criminal gangs who under the protection of US forces has been allowed to conduct a massive campaign of ethnic cleansing.

Israel: The World's only Nation whose people have voted their Prime Minister the most corrupt politician in their countries history.

Ethiopia: One of the most brutal of all the African Nations pushed by the United States to invade Somalia where over 1 million Somalis are now homeless and war is about to erupt between Ethiopia and Eritrea.

It is interesting to note that as this report is being written, the American people are celebrating one of their oldest holidays called Thanksgiving, and which celebrates the end of their harvest season and brings together separated families for giving of thanks for the success of the year they have had.

Not being understood by these Americans, however, is that their day of thanksgiving has been paid for by the blood of countless thousands of war dead, including their own, and millions of homeless and starving refugees due to their ever expanding World War.

In, perhaps, one of the greatest ironies of the American peoples war against the World is this weeks demand by US War Leaders for all of their wounded veterans, who have lost limbs, eyesight and hearing, to return what are called their 'signing bonuses' because their injuries prevent them from fulfilling the obligations of their agreement to serve in the US military.

"If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.", said the futurist George Orwell, but which today the people in America do understand the meaning of, that is, until the war begins appearing on their very doorstep...and which it soon will."

Submission + - SiCortex intros SC072 - 72 proc. cluster for 15k

An anonymous reader writes: Darren Murph writes "Off hand, we can't think of how we'd truly utilize the horsepower generated by a 72-processor cluster shoved into a "whisper-quiet, low-power deskside cabinet," but we'd happily draw up a plan if forced. SiCortex — the same folks who delivered the bicycle-powered supercomputer — has introduced its new SO072 Catapult, which features a standard Linux environment, 48GB of RAM and a trio of (optional) PCIExpress slots. This aptly categorized high performance computer (HPC) sucks down less than 200-watts of power, sports a pair of gigabit Ethernet ports and has room for six internal hard drives. Reportedly, each of the 12 SC072 nodes is a multi-core chip with six CPU cores, and while $15,000 may seem steep for your average tower, we'd say this is a pretty good value considering the hardware."
