Submission + - Download Skyline Felirat Spoiler Ending (galihnisa.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Skyline Spoiler — After the debacle that was Aliens Vs Predator: Requiem, it’s fair to say that expectations were fairly low for Skyline. That is, until the first trailers appeared.

Submission + - Congress Not Concerned About TSA Behavior (msn.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Why isn't Congress concerned about the TSA's behavior? Obviously, because it doesn't affect them. They get to skip TSA groping entirely. So they won't have their little boys strip searched, nor will they end up flying while soaked in urine due to TSA agents ripping open a cancer survivor's urostomy bag. The man had to choose between flying while covered in urine and missing his flight. Sadly, President Obama is still defending the screenings, disappointing those who had honestly hoped for more change than this.

Submission + - The Cold War: Then and now (networkworld.com) 1

Roberto123 writes: A security expert with the NSA says a cyber cold war is being waged that has significant parallels to the Cold War between the U.S. and Soviet Union. Dickie George says the way to fight the cyber cold war is by building security into technology, make it transparent to the end user andcontinually monitor networks and update their security software.
Programming

Submission + - Speed-Coding, the art of programming really fast

An anonymous reader writes: Some geeks have taken to screen-recorders to recorded their progress as they code as fast as they can. Come to be known as speed-coding, not unlike speed-painting, it's a recreational form of programming mainly meant to awe an audience. It's hard to say where exactly this comes from, probably just from the combined awareness of screen recording software and easily distributed media (for example, youtube). The demoscene has maintained a similar form of really fast recreational programming called party-coding, where in which the aim is to program and otherwise create a demo within the time span of a demoparty.

Examples of speed-coding:

Speed-coding Perlin Particles: http://blog.joa-ebert.com/2008/01/20/speedcoding-2/

Submission + - Grad student looking to contribute to Open Source

An anonymous reader writes: I am an Applied Math grad student who knows a bit of Mathematics and a bit of programming. C++ being my first programming language, I am decent at it. I wish to start contributing to a numerical library with two purposes — contribute to open source and develop my C++ skills at the same time. I looked at the Boost libraries and joined the developer list. However, I have no idea on how to start contributing. I'm not an expert in template programming, having written only toy programs to understand that concept. I've used some of the OOP constructs like inheritance, but that too only for very small projects.

Could slashdotters please give me tips on how to get started on the contribution? Are there any other emerging numerical libraries to which I can contribute? Are there any other avenues where I can contribute to open source and improve programming skills?

Comment Re:Grad student here (Score 1) 404

Is it true in general for Europe? I had applied for a PhD position in ETH Zurich for which the pay was almost equivalent to that of an entry level job. I got an outright reject and later comforted myself with the fact that people who got that position had two Masters and all.

Submission + - Wikileaks insiders resign (wired.com)

Americano writes: Wired reports that at least six wikileaks insiders, including Daniel Domscheit-Berg, Wikileaks' spokesman in Germany, have resigned in the past few weeks. Those who have spoken with Wired cite differences and disputes with Julian Assange, and his autocratic leadership style, as the motivation for their departure.

From the article:
"You are not anyone's king or god," wrote Domscheit-Berg in the chat. "And you're not even fulfilling your role as a leader right now. A leader communicates and cultivates trust in himself. You are doing the exact opposite. You behave like some kind of emperor or slave trader."

"You are suspended for one month, effective immediately," Assange shot back. "If you wish to appeal, you will be heard on Tuesday."

Submission + - 8+hrs battery life other than Macs and netbooks ? 5

razwiss writes: Good morning Slashdot!

I'm searching the web for laptops that could last about a day on the battery. The main reason is that I'm going to University this fall and, with those large rooms, I may not have access to power outlets.

The main uses of this laptop will be:

-Note taking (anything better than Microsoft Onenote yet ?)
-Web developing (Anything running Wamp and netbeans is fine)
-[Optional] Gaming

What I'm looking for:

-Strong battery life (8hrs plus)
-Reasonable screen size (11" or higher), but still portable (16" is starting to get big to hang around)
-Reasonable weight, same reason as screen
-[Optional] Sub $1500
-[Optional] A graphic card with discrete memory that doesn't destroy battery life (is affordable Optimus technology possible ?), to go along with Gaming

I've been checking the Macs since they have a whopping 8++ hrs battery life (or so they say). The heck is that I largely prefer to encourage ANY other computer dealer or Operating System manufacturer, mostly because of Apple's recent allegations towards Google, Adobe, their mobile developers [...].

I bow for your knowledge Slashdot, help me make the right nerdy choice !
