Submission + - German court voids telcos data retention law (bverfg.de)

saibot834 writes: The highest German court Federal Constitutional Court of Germany ruled that a German telecommunications data retention law, which passed in November 2007, is incommensurate with the German constitution. The law required providers to save connection data (but not the content) of phone and mobile communications as well as connection information of E-mail and Internet traffic for six months. A class action of almost 35,000 citizen was filed and now, more than two years later, the Federal Constitutional Court ruled that even though data retention is not principally unconstitutional, but due to the right of informational self-determination, data must not be saved centralized, has to be protected and may only be used for very severe crimes; therefore the law passed is disproportional and now void.

Submission + - German Wikipedia reaches 1M article milestone

saibot834 writes: The German Wikipedia, the second largest language edition behind the English Wikipedia just reached it's 1,000,000 article milestone. Combined with 3.1M English articles and 240 other language editions, this adds up to a total of 14 million Wikipedia articles.

Interestingly, there is a request for deletion on the 1Mth article. German Wikipedia has been criticized for its rules on notability, which are stricter than on the English Wikipedia. Quality though, is often considered to be higher on the German Wikipedia.

Submission + - Politician Withdraws his Attack on Wikipedia.de (yahoo.com)

CoE writes: "Former Stasi member Lutz Heilmann withdraws his legal attacks on Wikipedia.de, a site linking to the German Wikipedia. As we discussed earlier, Heilmann obtained a preliminary injunction against Wikimedia Deutschland, the German Chapter of the Wikimedia Foundation, requiring them not to link to de.wikipedia.org anymore, even though Wikimedia Deutschland is in no way afflicted with Wikipedia content.
Heilmann appreciates that the inaccurate evidence (which cited a magazine of questionably accuracy) in his article have been removed, and states that he regrets any inconveniences German Wikipedia users had had."
