France Planning Non-Windows Tablet Tax? 227

An anonymous reader writes "Lots of countries around the world have private copying 'levies,' which are effectively taxes on products that store data, which is put into a pool to be handed out to copyright holders, as a sort of payment for the 'copying' that individuals do. This was quite popular with blank CDRs, for example, but has been expanded in certain countries to cover hard drives, iPods and other such devices. Over in France, they're looking to expand the levy to tablet computers, but apparently if that tablet computer is running Microsoft Windows, it will be exempted from the tax. iPads and Android-powered tablets will have the tax. Why? Well, the argument is that if a tablet is running Windows, it's really a 'computer.' But if it's running one of those 'mobile' operating systems, suddenly it's a brand new category. Not surprisingly, makers of Android tablets — including the French company Archos — are not at all happy about this."

Thats neat that they use SMS confirmation for call display for only $14 CDN. Is that a one time fee or an annual fee? In the US skype-in allows you to use your skype-in number for call display. Its too bad about skype-in not being available in canada. I plan to move back there some day and would love it if my skype hardware (standalone skype phone and my ipod touch+microphone+skype) would just work with a CDN phone number. Its funny that its currently owned by the 'Canada Pension Plan Investment Board' which is a government board, and its the government laws that explicitly outlaw skype-in for something related to 911 laws.

Submission + - Netflix to start streaming in canada (www.cbc.ca)

whtmarker writes: Netflix is launching its streaming service in Canada this fall. It will likely feature a different set of content due to different broadcasting rights in each country. This will be the first time Netflix has offered its services outside the U.S. They have been selling netflix enabled devices up there for some time. This allows netflix to gain market share on hulu, while amazon VOD and apple TV are still drowning in the pay per download model, which while successful for MP3s is not as successful as a subscription service.

Ctrl C and Ctrl V work in most gnome apps (see: gedit), but the ones that don't you can customize the app that way: example gnome-terminal (the console). However there is a good reason:

Ctrl-C the C is for cancel, so CTRL-C in gnome-terminal kills the current process. But the same things happens in XP's console (cmd.exe), CTRL-C won't copy and CTRL-V won't paste (for the same reasoning).

Toward the Open Company 272

Arto Stimms writes "The author of the e text editor is using the principles of open source to transform his company into an Open Company. Not only is he releasing the source, the company itself becomes totally open: no concept of bosses or employees. Anyone can join in at any time, doing whatever task they find interesting, for whatever time they find appropriate. This is in service of the idea of 'the real freedom zero': the freedom to decide for yourself what you want to work on."

Keeping the computer in the living room doesn't prevent them from stumbling on bad stuff.

The purpose of a good filter is 2 fold:
1. prevent kids from stumbling onto bad stuff.
2. prevent kids them from using the internet to be curious (the parent is paying for the connection and has a right to block or allow whatever they want).

A customizable filter is best: k9 (win/mac). Customizable = if blocked it allows the user to invite the parent to override the block, (and add the site to a whitelist). This way, the kids can still access blocked items.

So who determines what gets blocked? With a customizable filter, it is the parent, and because they are paying for the internet connection, they have a right to control what comes in on the internet connection. When the kids move out and go to college, they are old enough they can make their own decisions.

However, I haven't found a customizable filter and free for linux yet. If you have an extra computer with 2 network cards you can try untangle os a firewall os with content filtering. I will try the opendns suggestions listed below, because it sounds like you can choose what categories are blocked and which aren't.

What Does a $16,000+ PC Look Like, Anyway? 495

justechn writes "Tom's Hardware has an article about custom PC maker Puget Systems, who had just finished a custom $16,000 PC for one of their clients. So what exactly goes into a $16,000 system? How about: Four quad-core Opteron processors, 32 GB of memory, Windows Server 2008, Asus Xonar DX PCI Express sound card, 3Ware 9550SX-8LP SATA 3 Gb/s RAID controller, Two Western Digital 300 GB VelociRaptor hard drives in RAID 1, Two 1 TB Samsung SpinPoint F1s also in RAID 1, and Four 1 TB Samsung SpinPoint F1s in RAID 5. Puget went with MagiCool's Xtreme Nova 1080 radiator, Nine 120 mm fans, Four Koolance CPU blocks, Koolance combined pump and reservoir unit, and Cooler Master Stacker 810 case. In addition to all that hardware, it also runs very quiet and very cool. The temperature of the CPUs is 36 C at idle, 45 C at load."
