A lot of people have a elitist attitude in the Linux community; but it's not restricted to just one group (i.e., the developers or the users). It's the same elsewhere in other OS's as well. But still I find the users are the most likely to espouse elitist attitudes, not the devs.

most people just keep reusing their old XP disk rather than trying to learn something new.

I'm afraid you are a little confused; most people don't have a XP disc, let alone install from it. The majority of people buy a computer that has the OS already installed by the OEM.

chrb writes "With the recent discussion here on proprietary blobs in the Linux kernel, it's nice to see that today Sam Leffler has released the source for the Atheros Hardware Abstraction Layer under the ISC license, which is both GPL and BSD compatible. The Atheros chipset is used in many laptops, so this is another important step towards running a completely free distribution."

KDE developer Will Stephenson showcased KDE 4's 3D eye-candy on a 256Mb laptop with 1Ghz CPU and run-of-the-mill integrated graphics, pointing out that mini-optimizations haven't even yet been started. Their conclusions are quite amazing: "So far the big winner from the AMD-ATI deal is clearly nVidia. Today nVidia is worth two times and a half more than it was one year ago, while AMD is worth less than it was before buying ATI! This is simply amazing, AMD bought a 5 billion dollar company and instead of becoming a 15 billion dollar company nVidia was the one that became such company! Also during the last 1-year period Intel market value increased 43%."

aniyo~ writes with word of a collaboration of movie studios with distribution companies to come up with a system for rapid digital distribution of movie masters. Universal Pictures, Warner Bros., and a company called Digital Cinema Implementation Partners are working on technology that will allow much more responsive film distribution based on local needs. DCIP is wholly owned by the Regal, AMC, and Cinemark theater chains, which among them run 14,000 screens in North America. The new system would be available to those and other interested theater operators. About 2,200 U.S. theater screens currently show digital films, and today these are, by and large, delivered on hard drives.

After activating them I decided to do something I hadn't done for years and pour them down the toilet. The difference was that this time I had my camera ready, and the images I captured of the drops and film of the oily phenyl oxalate ester and H2O2 lightstick compound are reminiscent of galaxies, especially this one."
