Submission + - Is The Sun Surround by Dark Matter? (dailymail.co.uk)

rhyder128k writes: "This story is bubbling around a few of the mainstream news sites. I'm far from an expert, but wouldn't the existence of dark matter inside the solar system be an epoch making discovery if true?

From the Daily Mail article: "Scientists say they are now '99% certain' the Sun is surrounded by dark matter, a phenomenon first proposed in the 1930s by a Swiss astronomer.

Fritz Zwicky, who came up with the theory decades ago, believes that clusters of galaxies were filled with a mysterious dark matter that kept them from flying apart.
At nearly the same time, Jan Oort in the Netherlands discovered that the density of matter near the Sun was nearly twice what could be explained by the presence of stars and gas alone.

Yet even today, mystery surrounds whether dark matter actually exists at all, let alone where it is.""

That's an error in the article. It's a 3.x derived kernel but it reports as 2.6.x for compatibility reasons. Even "uname -a" shows it as 2.6.x. Just reviewed it for one of the mags.

In a nutshell, the kernel enhancements offer some improved performance on massive hardware, such as the stuff that Oracle is selling. The appeal of the distro is a business one. Server admins like the idea of something that has been tested and certified by Oracle from the hardware to the kernel, all the way up to OracleDB. Other than that, the userland aims to be completely the same as RHEL beyond some cosmetic changes. Basically, a business has to weigh up the total cost, and it seems to be quite competitive with RHEL. For people who aren't going to pay for the service contract or hobbyists , Centos is a better bet.

Quite right.

Since the beginning of the 70s, feminists have used the pornography "issue" as a stick to hit men with. They don't need pornography because practically every woman has an unlimited supply of the real thing.

Unless you are viewing illegal material, pornography is sexual activity between consenting adults. Looking at or participating in pornography should be treated with the same respect as any other form of consensual sexual activity. Just once, I'd love for a left wing feminist journalist/MP to take a look at some pornography featuring homosexual people and start dishing out terms like "disgusting", "degrading" or "unnatural".

The same feminists know perfectly well that many a man who has to share a house with a woman won't feel empowered to ask to have the pornography switched on. This is in a society where any man trying to limit the sexual freedoms of women would be criticized. And that's what this is about - hurting, punishing and humiliating men.

Your argument works on the premise that men and women are of equal ability in this role. I'm not saying that they are not. However, how do you account for the fact that men are over represented within the prison system of every society? If men and women are equal, surely this would mean that men are suffering disadvantages on a massive scale? Most liberals would argue that if non-whites (for example) were over represented in the prison system that it must be evidence of disadvantage.

Let's say that greater involvement in criminality was down to different hormones rather than systematic disadvantage suffered by males. In that case, couldn't these differences explain why men were more successful in leadership roles in business, scientific achievements or earning a high income? Oh no, it couldn't could it, because men and women are suddenly equal again.

Welcome to the current generation of ray traced game engine demos. They're poor looking. Apart from the metal sphere floating above the water and the odd glass refraction effect.

You'd think that they could hack something impressive looking together, particularly as they are competing against whatever it is the next generation of polygon rendering will come up with.

I must admit that I was disappointed by the pictures. It looks like some sort of large antenna array, and I was hoping that it was some sort of underwater research base. Hopefully there'll be a future announcement declaring that will be a proper underwater base because loads of nerds thought the idea sounded cool. An excellent point. It's also worth noting that Firefox is the most popular browser in Europe. Probably due to those EU regulations about Windows offering a default choice. Y'know the ones that people said would have no effect anyway.
