Apple and HTC Settle Patent Dispute 179

An anonymous reader writes "HTC and Apple have reached a global settlement that includes the dismissal of all current lawsuits and a ten-year license agreement. The license extends to current and future patents held by both parties. The terms of the settlement are confidential. From the article: '"HTC is pleased to have resolved its dispute with Apple, so HTC can focus on innovation instead of litigation," Peter Chou, HTC's chief executive, said in a statement. Tim Cook, Apple's chief executive, also expressed relief in a statement. "We will continue to stay laser focused on product innovation," he said.'"

Make it so that any windows user wouldn't know they weren't on Windows other than the missing Windows icon in the start button. Integrate Wine so it is seemless.

Make it so if I know how to use Windows, I can know how to use a Linux desktop.

There will need to be a classic mode for those like me who prefer the clean classic Windows 98 desktop, as well as one for those that like the Aero Glass or whatever that pretty mode is. (I don't like pretty mode, when I want to see the window behind my primary, I'll give it focus! I don't need to watch my window minimize, just get it out of my way!)

If you want to switch a desktop user, make it so the user doesn't have to know they switched.

Comment Is the telephone wiring Cat-5? (Score 1) 300

If the wiring is already Cat5, then you should be good to swap out the proprietary boxes and find the other end for the router/network closet.
If they are really telephone-grade wires, find the other ends and pull Cat5 through (by tying string/cat5 to the existing wiring.)

Whatever the right thing is, do it right the first time and the hotel will save money either fixing it or dealing with unhappy guests. It may cost more initially. Really unhappy guests don't return.

Rogue Satellite Shuts Down US Weather Services 202

radioweather writes "On Sunday, the drifting rogue 'zombie' Galaxy 15 satellite with a stuck transmitter interfered with the satellite data distribution system used by NOAA's National Weather Service (NWS), effectively shutting down data sharing between NWS offices nationwide, as well as weather support groups for the US Air force. This left many forecasters without data, imagery, and maps. Interference from Galaxy 15 affected transmissions of the SES-1 Satellite, which not only serves NOAA with data relay services, but also is used to feed TV programming into virtually every cable network in the US. NOAA's Network Control Facility reports that the computer system affected was NOAA's Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) used to issue forecasts and weather bulletins which uses the weather data feed. They also state the problem is likely to recur again this month before the satellite drifts out of range and eventually dies due to battery depletion."

Google Algorithm Discriminates Against Bad Reviews 175

j_col writes "According to the official Google blog, Google has altered their PageRank algorithm to not give back linking points to bad reviews of websites belonging to online retailers, following the publication of a recent article in the New York Times describing one woman's experiences in being harassed by an online retailer she found via Google. The specific changes to the algorithm are of course a guarded secret. So considering that these changes are already live, how do we know how the algorithm determines a bad review from a good one, and whether or not innocent online retailers will be wrongly punished by having their rankings downgraded?"

It is also more toddler friendly. No more scratched disks! Also back-up those games that don't let you back them up so your perfect Mario Cart Wii 3 starred mirror cups don't suddenly go poof while you have your back turned for a second.

Why isn't there better security on the "delete" features of games? (or better hidden?) Some games make deleting a save just as easy as loading it! I'm looking at you Rabbids go home.
