Comment The future will be Hell (Score 0) 581

The problem is that we have many millions of people with NO useful skills. They are also mostly untrainable, or they wouldn't have ended up skillless in the first place. In the past, our economy had a place for these people. The future is likely to be different.

But instead of an enlightened, Roddenberry-esque future with time freed up by automation to pursue creativity, the politics of the evergreen American Puritans will ensure those without a job will still be perceived and treated like sub-human trash, harassed and killed by corporate Pinkertons called 'the cops'..

Comment Dennis Miller (Score 0) 193

Nah, Dennis miller is a conservative former comedian. Back when he was still doing comedy, it was pretty centrist, with the social aspect leaning a bit to the left.

After 9/11 made him shit his pants, he started being conservative, and stopped being a comedian, opting to move his "big words and obscure references" style into punditry, where it works about as well as you might expect.

I suspect his reaction to 9/11 was just like Karl Rove's: he danced a jig when he realized it could make him rich.

Comment Long-lasting sparks (Score 0) 152

Right before this announcement, there were stories of California fire officials asking golfers to be careful when using the now rather common titanium clubs in the rough, as the sparks generated when duffers hit rocks with them can last long enough to start a dry brush fire.

So again; what happens when such sparks encounter spilled fuel from a conventional car involved in an accident with a Tesla? (Here come the downvotes).

Comment Ammo in a different form (Score 2) 630

Not much room needed for the projectiles, less danger of a powder room exploding, fine. But none of this seems to even mention: what is generating the massive amount of electrical energy required per shot? Not to mention rate of fire - how much time is needed to generate that power for each shot? That this is a very quiet elephant in the room implies it's pretty bad on both counts.

Comment CD Greed all over again (Score 1) 143

By the way, as additive manufacturing becomes commonplace, do you really think even a penny of the (3x? 10x?) savings over subtractive will be passed onto the consumer? Of course not; just like CDs that were oh so expensive to produce initially and then became pennies per due to scale and advances. Yet the prices stayed about the same at the consumer level. Lather, rinse, repeat (getting screwed by corporations).

Comment Must be a 3D Printer AND a 3D Scanner (Score 1) 143

What most folks would want is an easy way to 3D scan the little plastic doodad (probably off their car) that has been temporarily been super-glued back together again just to get the proper shape file. Maybe a little sculpting to clean up edges or build back up worn edges, but that's all that will be needed.

I suppose, however, the real reason a 3D scanner won't ever be included is that is a sure way to be sued for facilitating the dreaded IP THEFT. Sigh.
