Submission + - Robert Jordan Dies At 58 (bbc.co.uk)

Torvaun writes: "Author Robert Jordan has succumbed to the blood disease he had been fighting for years. Despite the increasingly lackluster performance of his more recent novels, there is no denying that he has had a massive impact on the fantasy genre. No news yet about what this means for the book he was working on, which was intended to be the final book in the Wheel of Time series."

Submission + - The History of the Nintedo Family Computer (4colorrebellion.com)

neil_beforezod writes: "Two well regarded gaming blogs, 4colorrebellion and Powet.tv, have joined forces to tell the story of the revolutionary console that helped revived gaming: the Nintendo Family Computer or the Famicom. The Famicom, the older brother to the NES, may never have been release in the U.S. nor have every reached the fame of its younger brother, but it's presence had everlasting effects on what the gaming industry is today."

Submission + - 10 Procrastination Avoidance Tips for Techies

kierny writes: Dice.com runs an article on 10 tips for avoiding procrastination. According to researchers, almost everyone procrastinates, and up to 20% of people do so chronically. Overcoming the tendency to procrastinate is especially difficult for techies, give that technology — while boosting productivity — also leads us to distraction, and distractions — Flickr, Skype, IM'ing, BlackBerries — stoke our desire to procrastinate. To help, a leading industrial psychologist recommends a number of techniques to avoid honing your art of delay, from deactivating email notification and killing short-cut buttons, to banishing the Dew and getting separate PCs for work and home.

Submission + - A Newbie-Friendly Guide to Switching to Linux

notthatwillsmith writes: I just posted Maximum PC's June cover story, a practical feature explaining exactly what a typical user needs to switch to Linux. I used Ubuntu Feisty as our example distro, but our instructions should work with most any Debian-based distro. While we did include the standard install walkthrough, we also spent a lot of space introducing the apps that people will need to handle common Windows tasks, like ripping CDs, editing and managing photos, and watching videos. Also, we've released the entire article under a Creative Commons license, so if you don't like our instructions, feel free to rewrite them and re-release them yourself!

Submission + - Latest MS updates reset default browser

An anonymous reader writes: I have installed the latest round of Microsoft critical updates (http://update.microsoft.com) to a couple of computers, and in both case the default browser was changed from Firefox to IE. That doesn't seem like a critical update...

Submission + - OECD disputes piracy claims

jvillain writes: "The OECD is now disputing the claims of the lobby groups about how much money is really being lost to piracy.

"The report, due for endorsement by the OECD board later this month, could prove embarrassing for international business lobbies, which have used the higher estimates to lift intellectual property rights up the global political agenda and to demand crackdowns in China and elsewhere."

Submission + - Inside Google's UK offices

An anonymous reader writes: CNET.co.uk has recently taken some pictures of the inside of Google's UK offices. What's particularly interesting about these photos, however, are Google's recycling bins and word that it is advising employees to ride bikes to work." Whether or not this is representative of the global company, it is good to see that Google UK isn't a purely commercial machine." Is Google really evil after all?

Submission + - Microsoft efforts to reach young developers

rchawdry writes: "Aside from the absolutely ridiculuous marketing collateral, Microsoft at least has some efforts to reach out to young programmers. As a parent, I can see the educational value of these efforts as they can teach young minds to solve problems with computers, however, the fact that Microsoft tools are a necessary part of this seems an awful lot like indoctrination at an early age. Are there similiar efforts in the open source world?"
