apple is a design company and not an engineering company, jobs is a minimalist his philosophy has been think of what you don't do and not what you can do. That is why their OS did not even have multi-tasking, average joe does not care if your OS can multi task, but he need to be able to make phone calls and check his email, and play casual games. That said, I think jobs should find real reasons if he claims that his product is better. No doubt apple product looks "prettier" than any andriod product out there, he should have just said, we make pretty phones and your phones are just too damn ugly. I could probably agree with that.

3 Drinks a Day Keeps the Doctor Away Screenshot-sm 470

Nzimmer911 writes "Heavy drinkers outlive non-drinkers according to a 20 years study following 1,824 people. From the article: 'But a new paper in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research suggests that - for reasons that aren't entirely clear - abstaining from alcohol does actually tend to increase one's risk of dying even when you exclude former drinkers. The most shocking part? Abstainers' mortality rates are higher than those of heavy drinkers.'"

Prince Says Internet Is Over Screenshot-sm 450

the_arrow writes "According to the artist currently known as Prince, 'The internet's completely over.' At least that what he says in an interview with the British newspaper Mirror. Quoting Prince: 'The internet's like MTV. At one time MTV was hip and suddenly it became outdated. Anyway, all these computers and digital gadgets are no good. They just fill your head with numbers and that can't be good for you.'"

Comment Degree not required for... (Score 1) 612

You need logic, reasoning, analytical abilities and some sort of capacity to "think outside the box". Some people are naturally born with it, some have to train for it. School does that to you, 4-6 yrs of training molds your brain a certain way, but there are no guarantees that you will become a good programmer if you dont have the aptitude for it. Sure some ppl have trained monkeys to pick stocks, but you need a lot more than that to pick them consistently. Similarly, you need to have a solid foundation if you want to start building a career in software technologies... You dont need a degree to make money in software ... look at Bill Gates.

How To Find Bad Programmers Screenshot-sm 359

AmberShah writes "The job post is your potential programmer's first impression of your company, so make it count with these offputting features. There are plenty of articles about recruiting great developers, but what if you are only interested in the crappy ones?" I think much of the industry is already following these guidelines.

Comment Consumer Education - mainstream adoption of Linux (Score 1) 310

why is that a good quality operating system like Ubuntu (or other linux distros to be fair), which is given away for free not able to replace Windows or OSX.? 1. Lack of advertisement or consumer education, average joe does not know that there is an option. 2. Lack of OEM carrying Ubuntu pre-installed products, only dell does it so far. 3. Lack of apps used by people on daily basis, apps like Adobe photoshop, tax software, games etc. What are you doing in order to address these three basic hurdles in the path of Linux adoption in mainstream computer consumer market?

7 of the Best Free Linux Calculators 289

An anonymous reader writes "One of the basic utilities supplied with any operating system is a desktop calculator. These are often simple utilities that are perfectly adequate for basic use. They typically include trigonometric functions, logarithms, factorials, parentheses and a memory function. However, the calculators featured in this article are significantly more sophisticated with the ability to process difficult mathematical functions, to plot graphs in 2D and 3D, and much more. Occasionally, the calculator tool provided with an operating system did not engender any confidence. The classic example being the calculator shipped with Windows 3.1 which could not even reliably subtract two numbers. Rest assured, the calculators listed below are of precision quality."
