Submission + - Asus embeds Linux on motherboard

bigzeh writes: "Reviews of boards based on Intel's X38 chipset are starting to appear on the web. It looks as if Asus have decided to embed a Linux distro on their flagship P5E3 Deluxe motherboard. Although it's not up to much more than basic web browsing and Skype calling at the moment, you would hope that Asus will either let the community create their own third party apps for the distro, or add new features to it over time. Lets hope it's the former!"

LittleBigPlanet Could 'Move Consoles' For PlayStation 3 122

The always popular Michael Pachter offered up the opinion last week that LittleBigPlanet may be the title the PlayStation 3 needs to have breakout success. In a report pointing out failings on Microsoft and Sony's part to appeal to 'family gamers', Pachter said: "After seeing LittleBigPlanet at TGS, I believe it could be a console mover. The game is really innovative, and I think it adds a family element that is so far missing from both the Xbox 360 and the PS3. If they can accompany that game's launch with a price cut (or a lower priced SKU), I think we'll see a spike in sales." The game is really innovative, and I'm looking forward to it a bunch ... but I think I agree with the folks at Ars when they say the pricetag is still too high to appeal to family gamers.

Submission + - Twitter and other Microblogging Sites Reviewed (extremetech.com)

ThinSkin writes: "It's not enough to follow somebody's blog and learn what they did this morning, or yesterday. Some people are turning to microblogs to learn what people are doing now. ExtremeTech reviews Twitter and three other Twitter-like clones that are introducing newer ways to communicate with others. Some of these services include features that allow you to receive text messages from your fellow microbloggers, trade photos, make friends, and so forth."

Slashdot Turns 10 But You Get The Presents 636

October marks 10 friggin years of Slashdot, and nobody is more surprised about any of this than me. Throughout the month we'll be running a series of navel gazing meta news articles about our history, infrastructure and plans for the future. We're also going to give away 500 t-shirts and ThinkGeek gift certificates to people willing to organize and attend their own local Slashdot parties. One lucky winner will get a cool grand to blow at ThinkGeek! I'm going to attend "official" gatherings in Ann Arbor, MI on Oct 20 and in Palo Alto, CA on Oct 25. But you can read on for details about party organization and how you can win the grand prize.

The Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) will be used for surveying, telecommunications, transport, identifying disaster areas and public safety, amongst other uses. The first satellite of the proposed IRNSS constellation, developed at a cost of almost 404 million dollars, is expected to be launched in 2009.

Submission + - To use Orkut or not to use Orkut... (blogsport.com)

An anonymous reader writes: With all of the different web sites supporting blogging, social networking, and the like; which one seems to be taking the leadership spot? I am interested in establishing an online community and am thinking of using Orkut. My reasoning behind this decision is based on the fact that Google controls it and I hope, one day, Orkut will be seamlessly integrated into the Google collective.

Right now, Google seems to be offering parallel services amongst Google Groups, Blogger, Orkut, gmail, gtalk, Page Creator, and Local Business Center. I understand some of these services were not "Invented" at Google, so there will be some redundancy; but I hope this is just a temporary inconvenience.

It would be very cool if Google could get all of these services integrated, along with Google Earth/Map, and have a dashboard (iGoogle?) providing a one-stop site to do all of my blogging/networking/searching/time wasting.

What does the /. Community think of Orkut and the idea of having Google integrate all of these services and eliminate some of the redundant functionality?

Google Launches First YouTube Ads 217

A user writes "Video website YouTube is to feature advertising for the first time, after Google revealed it is offering companies the chance to run ads on some of the site's most popular content." I can't wait to sit through a dozen commercials while I try to waste some free time.

Submission + - gaming-wiki.com launched! (gaming-wiki.com)

Sargonas writes: "Gaming-wiki.com has been launched recently, a fresh attempt at a community driven gaming site. While the review sites are in an over-abundance, they are limited to information written by staff that is paid to write specific issues, with a user opinionated slant. While this is good, it does not provide the one stop shopping source for all-encompassing info that a wiki on the same subject can provide.

Gaming-wiki aims to be the first gaming related wiki that builds up a strong user base and CONTINUES to move forward with community backing, unlike similar attempts in the past that were left on the side of the tubes due to disuse. A wiki is first and foremost a community driven system, without users to submit, it grows stale and old. With hope, this new endeavor will build up enough momentum to carry itself into the spot of the premier place for gaming information."
