Zing!

Did you know there's an Oculus enabled SL beta available?

I'm pretty sure the only thing left keeping SL alive these days is the furries that have sex on the network.

There never were actually that many furries in SL. What's keeping SL alive are the 25-55 year old women.

If I'm not mistaken, even they don't like SL much anymore.

I really don't know why people associate furries with SL, since they are HUGELY outnumbered by every other demographic. Personally I think the association exists because a bunch of slashdotter-nerds, entering SL to check it out, headed to the more nerdy spots in SL: scripter/builder hangouts/sandboxes...and thusly ran into SL's heavily furry scripter/builder/aspie crowd. They're not furry because of the sex, they're furry because they feel alienated from real-world social culture and the average SL social culture too. Their furry form is a "take that" to the "barbie's and kens"

Comment Why not a comparison to Defiance? (Score 1) 93

When I first heard about this game I was thinking, "Oh, someone's going to try to do a more successful Defiance"? Defiance being the sci-fi MMO shooter based on the Syfy TV series of the same name. I played the Destiny Beta, and it's basically Defiance.with faceless master-chief-ish characters. It wasn't equal to Defiance during the beta and I was wondering how they'd get it done in time because it wasn't "ready" and needed more work. I actually told someone that "unless they put a lot of work in it, you're better off playing Defiance. Defianceisn't the greatest game either, but the PS4 doesn't have Defiance so you're stuck with Destiny if you want a similar experience on the PS4."

They really should allow you to use a mouse and keyboard from the getgo instead of going out of your way to buy dongles, people do it anyway.
You can use gamepads on the PC, why not a mouse and keyboard on a console?

Where have you been for the past 14 years, you don't need a dongle. Consoles DO allow you to use a mouse and keyboard, but as drinkypoo says, the question is whether the game supports it.

The PS2/PS3/PS4 have USB ports for a reason. I have games for all 3 that have mouse and/or keyboard support.

The genes they identified were all proteins.

I'm not that much of an expert on microarrays, but I'm pretty sure most or all of the arrays they used predate the Encode project's results that made people re-evaluate the question of how much of the genome is really important. Here is a list of the arrays they used:

Illumina: HumanHap550, 318K, 350K, 610K, 660W Quad, HumanOmniExpressExome-8 v1.0, Human610 Quadv1, 370, 317, HumanOmniExpress-12v1 A

Affymetrix: GeneChip 6.0, 250K

This study was the keystone project of a consortium founded in early 2011. I think, given the size, it simply took this long to get the results. That, too, was a time before Encode publications had really started impacting the world. Whatever RNA genes they would have had at the time would be pathetic and paltry by comparison to what we consider worth studying now.

We know that the most important distinctions between humans and other animals are in RNA genes, that most of the genome is transcribed as RNA genes and that the brain modifies itself using them and that malfunctions in them cause disease. This study ignored RNA genes entirely, AFAICT. Its mindset is about ten years out of date and simply reaffirms what everyone already assumed: proteins aren't everything. Intelligence probably still has a significant genetic component, this study just looks in the wrong place. (Psst: SNP studies are snake oil in almost all unsolved diseases.)
