Comment Re:Rent a Tesla for $1 (Score 1) 335

Election fraud is claimed to be rare because there is no way to quantify it if you can't verify the identity of the voter. I could vote for my whole family and no one would know. All my friends who are lazy and I can't get to go to mid-term elections I might as well vote for them too. All I need is a passable signature and their home address (which is public record). Now when people are polled, do they admit to committing a crime? Probably rarely...

I believe we need to make election processes simple, efficient, sensible, and communicated well in advance of the election. In other words, NOT what the republicans are proposing... They should be implementing these laws for the NEXT election cycle at a minimum, and make it well known to the population well in advance of any candidates even being proposed. You shouldn't campaign on election laws at all.

As for making it harder for people to vote. Maybe it'll be called racist to say this, but people who live in the United States of America in 2014 without a form of photo ID are EXACTLY the people who shouldn't be voting. There are plenty of other people WITH photo ID who also shouldn't be voting, but I will not shed one tear for someone who can't vote because they can't come up with proof of their identification.

Of course, the alternative that I would be happy with is the simple ink on the hand that 3rd world countries do that is more effective in preventing voter fraud than what we have now...

While I agree with the AC that the majority of regions lean republican, the reality is that this problem is a result of gerrymandering. I believe in addition to restoring the states appointing senators, the house should move to an MMP election system to more accurately represent the political beliefs of the people. More people might lean democrat than republican at this point, but the reality is that most people are against the two party system (but despite that won't vote that way under the current system).

I agree, claims of voter suppression and racism are bullshit. Is it suppression for all the other things that require ID in the modern world? I hope you never have to fly, buy alcohol, medicine, cash a check, or do anything else either.

As far as us being a democracy, our founding fathers had a healthy fear of it. The direct election of senators for sure messed up the system of government. If we want only representatives elected by the people, just drop the senate altogether. The house already represents the will of the people. The senate was supposed to represent the states, and now it doesn't... It represents the people, but in a horrible proportion unlike the house. In what world does that make sense?

I have MythTV running with a 3TB drive, but it's down to the last 100GB. It also holds all our photos and Time Machine backup for one iMac. I'm now planning a FreeNAS box with 8TB usable and drive slots for three more drives when that fills up (probably 6TB or larger drives by then). I plan on ripping all our DVDs and putting them in storage.

I did a comparison of the cost between the server and a nice entertainment center that was mostly for storing DVDs, and the server won by a landslide.

I think for most people this sort of thing doesn't make sense, but there are a few places where it does:

*) Security. If you're paranoid about break-ins, being able to monitor your home remotely can bring some peace of mind.

*) Stalking your family. The same security features will sell to anyone that wants to know what their family is doing when they're away. This isn't necessarily a bad thing; think of baby monitors and such.

*) Remote management. If you have a property like a vacation home or are just away from home a lot, being able to remotely manage the heat and air conditioning is a huge benefit. This also brings in the potential to do things like automatically disable the air conditioning if a door or window is open. I would love to have a thermostat that would display "close the sliding door to activate the air conditioning."

But yes, for most people, there is no need for any of this.

Then again, I would love to have automatic blinds that open and close based on such criteria as sunrise/sunset and weather. In the winter, I want the skylight blinds open during the day and closed at night. In the summer, I want the reverse. All the window blinds should close a half-hour after sunset by default (or maybe I would find something else makes sense).

The only 'veritable idiot' here is you, somebody who still does not understand what reality is.

Most certainly nobody at all under any circumstances, regardless of what is happening in the least should ever be compelled under the barrel of a gun to pay for anybody's life, including lives of any number of children.

A child is a responsibility of his or her parents and if they cannot deal with it, other people step in, but nobody should be forced to.

Possibly, but more likely they're dropping their subchannels that were ignored by everyone anyway.

Most broadcasters use their physical channel for one HD logical channel and several SD streams. For example, 4.1 might be HD CBS, 4.2 might be the same thing in SD, and 4.3 might be continuous weather. If they drop the SD channels, they can probably fit in both HD channels with little degradation.

Human right violation is a violation of the right of an individual to exist without being harassed by supposedly 'legal' powers that authorities hold. If the gang was an arm of a government, then it would be violating human rights of Tutsis while murdering them.

The economy did not grow since 1971, the economy shrunk since then. The economy actually collapsed, you are just not aware of it yet, because you don't have eyes, you are listening to propaganda, which tells you nonsense about the fake GDP, fake CPI, fake employment, fake dollar, everything at this point in USA is fake. There is no economy, economy produces stuff, USA consumes on borrowed money and time, consumes stuff that others produced without paying for it, thus the 500Billion USD/year trade deficit.
