Cfl's are often driven too hard. Especially the small bright ones. They squeeze more juice through them than is good for them, to make them emit more light. The clunky not too bright ones should laster longer. I have good experiences with the ones from ikea. Exactly the same applies to bright led bulbs also. Lumens sell, low price sells -> squeeze more juice though fewer or lower grade led's.

Diesels also run cooler. Most of the time an engine is used under light load, to maintain speed of the car. A diesel, unlike an Otto engine takes in the full amount of air under light load, this reduces the temperature of the exhaust gasses tremendously. That reduces problems with valves, is easier on the oil, seals etc.
