Submission + - Hacker pwns police cruiser and lives to tell tale (theregister.co.uk)

Gunkerty Jeb writes: As a penetration tester hired to pierce the digital fortresses of Fortune 1000 casinos, banks and energy companies, Kevin Finisterre has hacked electronic cash boxes, geologic-survey equipment, and on more than one occasion, a client's heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning system.

But one of his most unusual hacks came during a recent assignment testing the security of a US-based municipal government. After scanning several IP addresses used by the city's police department, he soon discovered they connected directly into a Linux device carried in police cruisers. Using little more than FTP and telnet commands, he then tapped into a digital video recorder used to record and stream audio and video captured from gear mounted on the vehicle's dashboard.

Submission + - 10 of the Best Free Linux Earth Science Software (linuxlinks.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Earth science (also known as geoscience) is the focus of understanding the sciences related to the planet Earth. It includes a wide range of fields such as geology, geography, geophysics, meteorology, oceanography, and glaciology. Some people are surprised to learn that astronomy is also regarded to be an earth science. Geology is generally considered to be the primary earth science.

Science really prospers and advances when individuals share the results of their experiments with others in the scientific community. There is a certain logic that scientific software should therefore be released under an open source license. Software is crucial in helping earth scientists carry out scientific research in understanding the system earth and its interplay with society.

To provide an insight into the open source software that is available, we have compiled a list of 10 of our favourite earth science software. Hopefully, there will be something of interest here for budding scientists that need to work with large amounts of data with spatial attributes.

Submission + - Apple, Microsoft, Google, others sued over smartph (cnet.com)

suraj.sun writes: Apple, Microsoft, Google, others sued over smartphone patent :

A lawsuit filed by H-W Technology earlier this week in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas Dallas Division claims Apple, Microsoft, Google, RIM, and 28 other major technology companies are infringing on a U.S. patent number 7,525,955, described as an "Internet protocol (IP) phone with search and advertising capability." was granted in April 2009.

In its filing from Wednesday, which was picked up by The Loop, H-W Technology says the patent deals with smartphones that can plug into applications and thus get "information and offers from merchants and to complete a transaction with one of said merchants without having to generate a voice call." In other words, this affects both application stores and commerce applications.

Submission + - PETA Quits GoDaddy after CEO Shoots Elephant 1

Hugh Pickens writes writes: "Bob Parsons, chief executive of the Internet domain-hosting company Go Daddy, has been roiled in controversy after he killed an elephant in Zimbabwe and posted a video of the hunt on his blog that justified the shooting because the meat fed villagers and helped farmers scare pachyderms away from crops. Now the LA Times reports that People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has closed its account with Go Daddy and urged others to do the same. "Parsons is hiding behind the lame claim that killing elephants helps farmers in Africa whose crops are damaged by the animals," says PETA. "In fact, there are ample effective and nonlethal methods to deter elephants from crops, including using chili-infused string and beehives on poles to create low-cost 'fences." Meanwhile Parsons continued to defend his actions as good for local villagers. "These people have literally nothing and when an elephant is killed it's a big event for them, they are going to be able to eat some protein.""
