Submission + - Microsoft releases Vista SP1 to users

odoketa writes: I was surprised to see an update waiting for me when I checked windows update this evening. One update weighing in at 200MB could only mean one thing, and checking the details, sure enough, it was Service Pack 1. According to the Overview of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 article on technet, there's a whole lot of 'improved reliability' and 'increased compatibility' waiting for people on the other side of the update process.

Feed Engadget: Numark's TTi turntable transfers vinyl to iPod sans a PC (engadget.com)

Filed under: Misc. Gadgets, Portable Audio

Sure, there's a smorgasbord of products out there designed to transfer your precious vinyl recordings to a slightly more modern format, but few pack the cool factor that comes bundled in gratis with Numark's TTi. This newfangled turntable not only brings back not-so-fond memories of your second high school prom, but it also boasts an integrated iPod dock, USB interface, a metal platter and pitch control to boot. Besides ripping records directly to your 'Pod, the unit also features a line-level output and comes with versions of EZ Vinyl Converter software for the PC or Mac should you prefer vinyl-to-computer ripping. We know, it's tough to leave the 70s, but the TTi should make the transition somewhat less painstaking when it lands in Q2 for $449. One more angle's waiting after the break.

Submission + - Killer Tiger Taunted 1

theodp writes: "You don't tug on Superman's cape, you don't spit into the wind, you don't pull the mask off the old Lone Ranger, and you don't mess around with Tatiana. According to court documents, one of the two survivors of the Christmas Day SF Zoo tiger attack that left a 17-year-old dead told the victim's father that the three had yelled and waved at the animal while standing atop the railing of the tiger's exhibit. And late Friday, a judge ruled the SF Zoo may inspect the brothers' mobile phones for photos that might provide clues about what happened that day, and for logs of conversations near the time of the 911 call."

Submission + - Older iPod Classics locked out of Movie Rentals (tuaw.com) 1

An anonymous reader writes: Though Apple's own press release states that "Movie rentals work on iPod classic, iPod nano with video and iPod touch," that's not really the case. Unlucky owners of iPod Classic generations 5 and 5.5 can certainly PAY to download the rentals, but they can't transfer them to their iPods. Another Apple bait and switch? Since these models play iTunes movies just fine, a simple firmware update would enable the new rentals service to work. But that wouldn't encourage consumers to scrap their old gear fast enough, would it?

Submission + - Blu-ray users "knew what they were getting int 1

seebs writes: "Blu-ray early adopters "knew what they were getting into," say blu-ray developers, announcing that every single blu-ray player ever sold, except for PS3 systems, is obsolete and will be unable to play forthcoming blu-ray discs, and no upgrade path will be available or even technically possible. This announcement was delayed until a couple of major studios shifted their support from HD-DVD (whose players will continue to work as long as discs are made) to blu-ray."
It's funny. Laugh.

Submission + - What a dumb a year it's been!

An anonymous reader writes: Fortune's "101 Dumbest Moments in Business" is out for 2007. And what a banner year it has been! Everything from CEO excesses (playing *LOTS* of golf while Merrill Lynch posts the first quarterly loss ever), fancy restaurants with expensive desserts (then the restaurant fails health inspection), sleazy business practices (e.g., Best Buy setting up an in-store web server with higher priced specials), and loads of hilariously defective or just plain unlucky technological stuff (e.g., 365 Main's 3-backup power failure). Apparently you can't be charged with DUI in New Jersey if you are driving a Zamboni (who knew?). Oh, and of course, there's Comcast's surprise porn.

Submission + - Scientists:Whale Might Came From Deer Like Mammals (xuecast.com)

XueCast writes: "http://www.xuecast.com/?p=393, The scientists at the NorthEastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine have just announced that it is very likely that the whales, Earth's largest mammals had been evolved from small sized deer like mammals. The scientists also believe that all Cetaceans ( Whales, Dolphins, and Porpoises ) might had been evolved from this deer like species as well. The scientists dubbed this ancient species as the Indohyus, because it is estimated that these ancient mammals used to live in where India was about 48 million years ago."

Submission + - Sony silently drops PS3 linux support. (ps2dev.org) 4

t0qer writes: "Up until this week, hackers at the PS2dev.org forums have been hot on the trail of writing a hardware accellerated driver for the PS3 RSX chip until Sony released thier new firmware. Now it seems that updating to the new 2.10 version of PS3 firmware not only blocks RSX access completely, but breaks linux installs as well. This is a harsh blow to the PS3 linux community."

Submission + - Internet Explorer 8 Passes the Acid2 Test (msdn.com)

mattmcm writes: (From the story) The IE team has been very hard at work on IE 8 for the past several months and they hit a huge milestone last Friday evening. The IE dev team checked in a bunch of code that included several new features implemented in the core rendering engine that enable IE to pass the ACID 2 test! This is great news for web developers: IE 8 is going to be our most standards compliant browser to date. Passing ACID 2 is really a combined side effect of all the new features that have been developed for IE 8.

Submission + - Court Allows Company To Copyright Cease & Desi (techdirt.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Techdirt has the news of a lawsuit where a company was allowed to claim copyright on a cease-and-desist letter that an anonymous blogger had posted to a blog. The company then used the DMCA to not just get the C&D taken down, but to try to find out the identity of a *different* anonymous blogger that it was accusing of libel. This could create chilling effects for anyone who tries to post a cease-and-desist letter online, as you might now face copyright violation charges on the C&D in addition to whatever the C&D was originally for.

Submission + - (Fly) Drive the road like a jet figther.

chicobaud writes: "I stumbled on this ready to market vehicle — the Venture One by Venture Vehicles — and I don't know if slashdot readers are aware of it or if it was published in here before. This is an hybrid 3 wheeled car with an option for a full gas motor with even bigger autonomy / range. It's a US $22.00 Dollars vehicle that's just amazing and fun to drive (watch the video on their web site). I wish I had one... This is a three wheel car that's rides like a true motorcycle. Well it's a car ! — but it rides like a jet air plane just one feet above the road with the behaviour of a motorcycle leaning as you make a turn. There are videos on their website to watch. Superb."

Submission + - NBC Has Hacked Their iPhone (gizmodo.com)

ESheline writes: If you looked closely at last night's episode of Saturday Night Live during the iPhone: The Affair sketch, you may or may not have noticed a certain extra "Installer" icon next to the iTunes button. So what's that icon signify? The iPhone being used was Jailbroken (or, hacked for programs and games, in layman terms).
