The "King of All Computer Mice" Finally Ships 207

An anonymous reader writes "The much-anticipated, much-mocked 18-button joystick mouse from WarMouse is now shipping. The press release features an impressive set of user quotes from game designer Chris Taylor, new SFWA president John Scalzi, and a doctor who runs a medical software company. Crazy or not, it's obviously more than just a gaming mouse."

Submission + - Indexing your life on the web

An anonymous reader writes: Hello all, I use a very unique user name (all numbers) when posting and creating accounts on the web. Originally it was for the purpose that the user name would never be taken, so I would always remember it. But today I complete a search for my user name and found 100's of pages dating back nearly 10 years of random posts I've made, and accounts I was no longer aware of on the web. Due to the fact my username is so unique, practicly all search results were relevant. Then it hit me that I could use the unique user name within other things such as web pages, scripts and images I've created so I could track if they were ever used for on other websites without permission. Just out of curiousity, I was wondering if the Slashdot community may have ever come across this before, or have any other thoughts or suggestions for tracking the life of your digital work.

Submission + - Darth Vader's professional diagnosis is not good. (screenrant.com)

An anonymous reader writes: French psychologists have taken a closer look at Anakin Skywalker’s descent to madness in the Star Wars saga as he eventually became Darth Vader. It turns out the issues may have more to do with nurture than nature.

If only the Jedi Council had thought to provide psychiatric analysis of its prospective Jedi, they may have been able to prevent the ultimate disturbance in the force – Darth Vader. A panel of French psychiatrists spent some time studying Anakin Skywalker’s life, including his turn as Darth Vader and concluded he suffers from “borderline personality disorder.”

Submission + - Microsoft's Web-based Office goes live (cnet.com)

suraj.sun writes: Officially joining the browser-based productivity game, Microsoft late Monday released the browser-based versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote.

The Office Web Apps, as the programs are dubbed, are slimmed down versions of the desktop counterparts, allowing for document viewing, sharing, and lightweight editing. Consumers get free access to the tools, along with 25GB of storage as part of Windows Live, while businesses can also host their own version of the Web Apps using the latest version of Sharepoint.

"We'll have more to share next week when Office 2010 is released to consumers, including how Office 2010+SkyDrive+Office Web Apps give you the best productivity experience across the PC, phone, and browser," Microsoft's Jason Moore said in a blog post ( http://windowsteamblog.com/windows_live/b/windowslive/archive/2010/06/07/office-is-now-live-on-skydrive.aspx ).

"In the meantime, if you live in the US, UK, Canada, or Ireland, you can head over to Office.live.com today to start viewing and editing Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and OneNote documents right in your web browser-and share them with your friends."

Palm Kills Community Before It Begins 247

Former Fan of Palm writes to tell us that an enthusiastic, supportive developer community has fallen victim to corporate ineptitude once again. The preDevCamp started as a community-driven effort designed to mirror the iPhoneDevCamp based on the new "Pre" product announced by Palm. Unfortunately, suspicion and legal posturing seems to have gutted the founders of any and all enthusiasm they may have once had. When will corporations realize that community support is the best way to drive success? "As a corporation, I acknowledge that Palm's only responsibility is to its shareholders. There's nothing self serving or evil about that; it's how things work in big business. However there are many keen and willing developers out there, who have been waiting for the arrival of WebOS. A development platform is only a success if it is broadly adopted. Instead of embracing the grassroots upswell of interest in WebOS that preDevCamp fostered, Palm seem to be, at best, oblivious and, at worst, disdainful of the enthusiasm and good will engendered by these folk. I think they are missing a real opportunity to be involved in and to help generate the growth of a vital community."

Comment I'm a guy... (Score 1) 562

'I'm a guy who doesn't see anything good having come from the the music industry, period.' Why? Because the music industry 'feels entitled' to sell what they want when they want to, and if they can't get it for $22, 'they'll blame piracy.'

To summarize the summary, this stems from the fact Sony (and others) as so high and mighty, that they feel they have the right to not participate in online purchasing. Then to top it off, charge customers an outrageous price to purchase via a means they may find inconvienient.

Canadian Nuke Bunker To Be Converted Into Data Fortress 197

miller60 writes "A hosting firm has purchased a nuke-resistant bunker in Novia Scotia, and plans to convert it into a data fortress for financial firms. Bastionhost hopes to attract European financial firms wary of housing sensitive data in the US due to the USA Patriot Act. The facility is one of a series of 'Diefenbunkers' built during the tenure of Prime Minister John Diefenbaker to keep the Canadian government running in the event of a nuclear attack. While not all of these underground data bunker projects work out, a similar nuke-proof bunker in Stockholm, Sweden was recently converted into a stylish high-tech data lair for an ISP."

Alien Comet May Have Infiltrated the Solar System 208

New Scientist has a piece about Comet Machholz 1, whose uncommon molecular composition suggests, but does not prove, that it may be an interloper from another star system. "Comet Machholz 1 isn't like other comets. David Schleicher of the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, measured the chemical makeup of 150 comets, and found that they all had similar levels of the chemical cyanogen (CN) except for Machholz 1, which has less than 1.5% of the normal level. Along with some other comets, it is also low on the molecules carbon-2 and carbon-3."
