It had to be an orbit that came with a climate that allowed complex life to evolve, about a billion years for Earth. Even the really primitive life would probably need close to ideal conditions to flourish long enough to oxygenate the atmosphere and lay the foundations for complex life.
Of course with only one sample it's hard to say if there are different routes to complex life.

I'd think that the planets orbit would be perturbed enough that it would no longer be in the Goldilocks zone, or at least the ideal considering its atmosphere (amount of CO2 etc)

Actually the story assumes that Kalgash existed in a stable orbit long enough for technological life to evolve, something that likely takes billions of years with our one example needing a planet that was fairly stable for close to 4.5 billion years.

Depends what you call a tree farm. Some intensely grow popular or other fast growing wood for pulp, others replant, do a bit of silviculture and wait 80 years to re-harvest.

Actually in many cases it is the best cooperator that wins, humans are an example where long term the tribes that work together survive the longest. The biggest jerk might do good for a while but once he drives away everyone else and finds himself alone, that's it for long term survival, at least with a social species such as Homo sapiens.
Even in other primates often it looks like the biggest jerk is winning but meanwhile all his females are screwing the other males and it is their genes that mostly continue the species.

Species that have a population explosion and use up all their resources usually eventually crash. Seems like they're the fittest for a while until they outstrip the food or other resources and then it becomes obvious that limitless expansion is not a long term survival strategy.

If you look closely a lot of those 2x4s have finger joints where they've built an 8 ft 2x4 from a couple of pieces of tree. Around here it used to be that they didn't bother with any wood that was smaller then 16 inches at the small end. Now I see trees leaving the bush that are barely bigger then my pecker.

It's complex. Note that Venus has lost most of its hydrogen and like the Earth, its helium. For the Earth, much of the atmosphere losses is probably hydrogen liberated by photo-disassociation of water which is where much of our hydrogen is tied up. Heavier molecules such as CO2 get held by gravity.
One future scenario for the Earth is to become Venus like, perhaps as soon as a billion years. The Sun gets hotter over its lifetime due to increasing percentage of helium from fusion increasing density, eventually the oceans boil which means lots of water vapor causing a runaway greenhouse effect. Limestone and other carbon sinks liberate their carbon due to the heat which combines with the oxygen which is released by the water vapor being photo-disassociated causing lots of CO2 and adding to the greenhouse effect. Plate tectonics stop due to no water to act as lubricant. Internal heat becomes more equal and convection stops around the core which shuts down the magneto. Eventually the interior heat melts the crust, lots of volcanism which releases more carbon and we're now Venus like.
One possible way that Venus became the way it is now is the above. Possibly life existed before the run away greenhouse effect kicked in and it is also possible the magneto starts up periodically on Venus after a resurfacing event cools down the upper mantle and convention restarts. Be interesting to know more about the interior of Venus.
There's also Titan, closer to the Moon in size and slightly higher atmosphere pressure (mostly nitrogen) then Earth, lots of variation out there and much we don't know.
