Xight writes: "Gizmodo recently wrote an article about Nigeria recently denying Bill Gates a visa to travel there on his recent trip to Africa proving that money can't get you everything. Whats even more amusing is that he was at "initially denied the Microsoft kingpin's application on the premise that they required proof he would not reside in Nigeria indefinitely, causing a strain on social services and a general nuisance for immigration.". I guess those Nigerian 419 scams really do pay off for them."

nut writes: A new local tv station at the bottom end of New Zealand, 45 South chose a $10 wok over a $20 000 commercial transmission dish. They claim better performance than their previous commercial aerials, as the solid metal of the wok prevents interference from behind the dish that plagued earlier wire mesh aerials.

The technology was originally developed by computer programmer Ken Jones to get broadband access at his rural property. Instruction on build your own Wok wireless acess point can be found here.

John writes: In an appearance at an Austin, Texas summit on public education, Steve Jobs said that teachers unions are detrimental to public schools. He further argued that schools should be run more like businesses and that technology alone couldn't improve education, according to an AP story.

"What kind of person could you get to run a small business if you told them that when they came in they couldn't get rid of people that they thought weren't any good?", Jobs added.

Gots_Hussies writes: Penny Arcade artist Mike "Gabe" Krahulik recently recieved an email from a woman who knew one of three teenagers who beat and murdered a homeless man. The email is a response to Krahuliks attack on the media for believing the teenagers story that 'violent videogames were the reason we did it'. Excerpt from article "Your news post about the kids and the homeless man yesterday made me sick to my stomach, before I even read the CNN article. I knew what it was going to be about before even reading the article. It was not the article itself, or even your post that made me sick, it was the fact that I know this boy. Or, rather that I could be considered one of the "parents" of this boy."

Responding to Torvalds' recent claim that GNOME 'seems to be developed by interface Nazis' and that its developers believe their 'users are idiots,' a member of the Linux Foundation's Desktop Architects mailing list suggested that Torvalds use GNOME for a month before making such pronouncements. Torvalds, never one to back down from a challenge, simply turned around and submitted patches to GNOME and then told the list, '...let's see what happens to my patches. I guarantee you that they actually improve the code.' After lobbing that over the fence, Torvalds concluded his comments by saying, 'Now the question is, will people take the patches, or will they keep their heads up their arses and claim that configurability is bad, even when it makes things more logical, and code more readable.'"

Turismo writes: European legislators aren't happy that the US has subpoenaed European financial information for four and half years from SWIFT, the Belgian group that allows banking systems to interoperate. Because it mirrored all European data to a US backup, SWIFT became the target of Treasury department subpoenas in the "War on terror." SWIFT has gotten in plenty of hot water back home, where the European Parliament just passed a resolution asking the company to stop hosting its data in the US. "The resolution makes it clear that SWIFT is not off the hook simply because the company was complying with US law. The decision to store European data in America was a "purely commercial decision" on the part of SWIFT; to better comply with its obligations toward European data, the company was advised to stop mirroring European data to the US or to move the mirror somewhere outside of US jurisdiction." Will other multinationals start doing the same thing?
