Demo of a New "Sixth Sense" Technology 187

TEDChris writes "Here's an intriguing attempt at a versatile new tech device that tries to augment the wearer's five senses. It comes out of Patty Maes's group at the MIT Media Lab. By combining a computerized personal projector with a camera and linking both to the Net, a host of surprising new applications becomes possible. This 8-minute demo created a lot of buzz at TED last month and was posted online today. Would love to know what the Slashdot community makes of it."

Resident Evil 5 Dev Talks Demo Feedback 114

MTV's Multiplayer blog sat down with Jun Takeuchi, producer for Capcom's Resident Evil 5, about the feedback they've gotten from the game's demo, which has been downloaded over 4 million times. He comments on the changed control scheme, which has generated a lot of discussion and criticism, by suggesting that their decision will become clear once the full game is out. "We understand that there are many people who want to run and shoot at the same time, but it's not the right alignment for the game." He also says the finished game will have shorter loading times, and he briefly discusses the media-fueled race controversy over the fact that Africa's zombies have dark skin. Takeuchi says, "People will be able to play the game and see what it is for themselves." Kotaku recently ran a preview of Resident Evil 5.

Submission + - What will you do if Google Mail dies? 1

jw3 writes: I can't check my google mail account for a few hours now. That made me think: what happens if it really dies? Like, for a few days? Or worse? Ever since I moved from pine a few years ago I have been using googlemail for all my accounts. Sure, I did forward e-mails from my job address to a local account somewhere... but with all that spam and no sorting, just trying to use it again is a major pain. Apart from that, there are plenty of other things that I happily handed over to gmail — and I just realized what a big chunk of my life relies on gmail working without glitches. Right now I am hitting obsesively the refresh button and thinking up all kinds of disastrous scenarios, starting with an empty inbox ("sorry, we have lost your e-mails... please accept our apologies").

Of course, gmail is just one of the many providers of web-based e-mails. When I look around, almost everyone seems to be using them nowadays. So — what do you do? Do you trust that the site of your web-based e-mail provider will never go down? Do you make backups of all your e-mails?

Submission + - Google Mail Down?

nicc777 writes: "It appears Google mail has been down for certain people for some time. I have experienced it down since about 12:00 CAT (Central Africa Time). So here's my question to slashdot: if a small business rely on a service like GMail, how can it (the business) ensure continued e-mail service when Google goes down? Maybe some one can suggest an alternative to GMail with small businesses in mind? I know Google is relatively stable but long outages like the current one does not do me a lot of good and I need options! Thanks for all the great help I just know I'm going to get!"

Submission + - xstress 0.37 beta with authentication support rele (sourceforge.net)

SF:xk0der writes: An update to xstress is now available. The latest 0.37 beta version has some new interesting feature additions. Authentication is now supported by xstress. Although this release supports only AUTH PLAIN mechanism. Development for AUTH LOGIN and CRAM-MD5 is underway. The new version also supports a way to view Client-Server traffic by using the debug option. This would be useful to troubleshoot errors while sending mails. More work is underway to re-factor, removing plaster fixes and the like and further fine-tune the performance of xstress. The goal is to make version 0.40 stable and totally excel performance wise. Wishlist:: TLS, SSL support : GUI Front-end.

I happen to stumble upon something similar here : http://podvoters.org/

PodVoters looks to me like a much better idea (IMO), because it's an online system for selecting candidates, according to a process that should yield much better candidates, than we get at present. It's not about users directly managing the entire legislative process which is too burdensome for most (any?) citizen.

just my two cents :)

Submission + - Sun eyes supercomputing glory (com.com)

xk0der writes: "Sun Microsystems on Monday revealed the Constellation System, a high-performance computing platform that company executives claim will vault the company back into the top ranks of supercomputer manufacturers.
Sun says it can get 6 teraflops, or 6 trillion operations, a second out of a single rack because each rack holds 768 cores. At right, it's the monster of all switches. This hardware has 3,456 ports on it.

xk0der: With this development in place, will the glory days of Sun shining bright be back? That is yet to be seen!"

It's funny. Laugh.

Submission + - At W3C : Public barred from 'public' conference (com.com)

xk0der writes: "The author: Declan McCullagh writes..
The World Wide Web Consortium, which purports to be an "open forum" for standards discussion, doesn't exactly live up to its own claims.
...
Danny Weitzner, one of the W3C's policy directors and event co-chair, repeatedly claimed in a followup telephone conversation that, by "public," the W3C actually means "closed to the public." Weitzner was the person who personally barred my colleague from entering the conference.
