I had to scroll on a 24" screen to just get to your post. when ever i have to scroll, the screen lacks height. so, yeah, i have that wheel, and no, it does not allow screens to be as thin as possible, just "because you can scroll". most content IS vertical, so higher screens would make more sence (and that's why most reader-type devices are always vertical oriented. but our pc's and laptops are used most of the time for reading/writing, too..). i started with a 15" laptop 5:4 format. 16:9 now is really annoyingly loss of real estate to work on it. for movies, it's nice. but for movies, i have a fullhd projector, thanks.

if it's a store it has a nearly infinte supply of copies (of the movie, not that particular disk) available there + on order. the only reason why someone bothers is because of the artificial cost of the movie applied to it (and the bit of physical material). but the movie is already a copy. it's not like they can't sell the movie anymore after you stole one copy. it's not like it's not there anymore. indeed, its' a move operation, not a copy operation, BUT of an already copied item. i'm not for stealing or copyright infringement. I'm not doing it myself (yes, i pay for my copies!!). I'm just saying the difference is negligible, as in no case, you steal the movie. you steal/copy clones of it. the store can still continue to promote and sell the movie, the industry still has the movie, and every owner on the world can still watch it. it's just one disk at a wrong place. just as your downloaded copy is just one copy at the wrong place. there is a difference, yes, but there is no difference in harm, actually. and this is where the analogy go "you don't steal a car" doesn't work. there, the physical instance IS the content. in case of the movie, it isn't.

ripping a dvd takes some minutes, ripping a bluray around 20min. i want your internet speed if ripping is too slow for you :) but yeah, even while my stuff is legal (and that, even while downloading would still be legal in switzerland), i rip it to get rid of all the surrounding crap. turn on the beamer, and chose the movie, and it just plays. the way i want my content: select it and play it. i can't stand the menus, the intros, the warnings, the trailers, all the crap of dvd's and blurays.

I'm using them now since around 2 years in all my systems except for the networked storage, and could never look back. what advancements other than much faster, quiet, less powerconsuming, reliable on shock/shake do you need? i'm happy with all that :) and centralization of the data led to the allowance for small cheap ssds on the systems, and huge cheap storage on the home server. the result is the most cost optimal highest performing and most consistent to use setup of >1 computers (5 in my case).

who cares? as long as it gives you the biggest perceived boost in performance ever, and thus is worth more than buying a new computer that costs at least 3 - 4 times as much, the ssd still is cheap. which is why i bought ssds for all my systems at home, except the windowshomeserver, as performance doesn't matter there. you can show me any expensive computer out there, and they all are the same to me: slow. believing it to be expensive is not understanding their worth.

there are always reasons, true. but when people would ONLY print stuff out when it really NEEDS to be on paper (like, if it would be a bad thing to do => only do it as a last option), the real problem would be solved. yes, we would still print stuff. no, it would not nearly be as much. it would not be a major cost, or environmental issue, or anything, anymore.

no, i want a convertible. like the 2730p i already have and can put to great use (and it's predessor, the 2710p). these are tablets that are better than notebooks, as they ADD flexibility, usability. they don't take away. every ordinary tablet takes away. oh, and, i want to see the backstand working well when lying on my legs.. in short: i already have all that those new tablets deliver. except, i have it in a comfortable way. unlike all the new ones. apple talked about the middlething between phone and laptop. netbooks wouldn't be it. but from ergonomics and usability, nor is an ipad.

they're not ergonomic. not for reading. not for writing. that is why they (hopefully) will fail. i have one right now to read/write stuff on. i can't lay it onto my legs on a chair to read nicely, like i could with a laptop. the angle is bad, i want to hold it to see directly onto it. but holding for more than some minutes is annoying. it weights (no matter if it's not much weight). writing on it sucks, too. gladly, i have a windows option, where i have the option to use the pen input instead of the multitouch keyboard (which i will hate on the ipad). and while you type with your hands, you can nearly not see on the screen anymore anyways, filling it wiht your hands. so when sitting, you want to write with one hand, hold it with the other. the keyboard doesn't fit your setup, then.. no, they really suck. i, too, have a convertible. next version will have slate mode, notebook mode, multitouch, pen input (capazitive) etc. it will allow me to use the best of normal laptop, tablet, pen, fingers etc. that will be awesome. normal tablets, no thanks. they completely fail at ergonomics. MASSIVELY. and when they do that, they should provide some good counterargument. phones do have that: you can take them always with you. doesn't matter then, that they're quite small, quite slow. the portability is a huge gain. what PLUS do tablets actually have? what do i GAIN from having one? i still wait for the one simple answer showing me a reason i should get one.. (i know some specific cases where i most likely will get one.. in the car, and for home-automation. maybe for djing, too.. other than that, no idea.. for the ordinary user, no idea)
