Ubuntu TV Finally Gets a Close-Up 146

Barence writes "Canonical has unveiled the first screenshots and details of Ubuntu TV. Plans for versions of the Linux distro for tablets, smartphones and TVs were unveiled last year, and now the television is — perhaps surprisingly — the first of those to arrive. 'It's a simple viewing experience for online video, both your own and routed over the internet,' Jane Silber, Canonical's CEO told PC Pro. Movie streaming services will be supported as well as live television broadcasts. Ubuntu TV will be integrated into television sets, but Canonical was unable to confirm any manufacturers. It will be released later this year."

Comment Still not a jailbreak. (Score 2) 60

It is a privilege escalation to a 'root' user, which in this context is equivalent to an 'admin' user.

In short, using an insecure backup/restore process, it changes the ability for root to login via ssh. No bootloader access, no 'jailbreak'. From there, all you get is what you could have done by developing an app.

As you could always load an app directly onto your Playbook, this is not all that impressive.

I have come to expect it from Crackberry, but though /. would have a critical eye.

RIM PlayBook Tablet Jailbroken 63

Trailrunner7 writes "A group of researchers is claiming that they've found a root exploit that enables them to jailbreak the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet made by Research In Motion. In a video demonstration of the jailbreak, one of the researchers shows off the ability to change the settings on a PlayBook and says that he also has the ability to install the Android Market app on the tablet."

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Won't Fit On a CD 488

gbl08ma writes "According to various sources, the ISO image size for the upcoming Long-Term Support Ubuntu version 'Precise Pangolin' will not fit on a regular CD, since the image size is expected to weigh around 750MB instead of the usual ~700MB. The idea is that users should either flash the image to a USB flash drive or burn it to a DVD. The extra room on the disc image could allow for integration of more GNOME3 components and Canonical applications. There was also a proposal to use a 1.5GB DVD image as the default download for Ubuntu 12.04."

Ubuntu Turns 7 244

sfcrazy writes "Ubuntu, the world's most popular GNU/Linux based operating system is celebrating its 7th year today. Ubuntu was first released on 20 October 2004. In these 7 years Ubuntu has changed the GNU/Linux desktop segment by making it more useful for ordinary user." Besides the work that Ubuntu has done to popularize and polish the Linux desktop, and to present a humane entry point for non-guru users, it's provided a base for many other distributions (like Mint and Puppy) and helped make people realize just how powerful is the Debian infrastructure that Ubuntu itself launched from.

Of course it is a problem. But it is not the end of the world. They have laid out a transition to QNX-based phones, and in the middle of than transition right now. Did they make mistakes last year with the pre-7 phones (underpowered, stagnant interface)? Yes they did, and this is a major part of their drop in overall market share.

This does not seem unrecoverable to me though.
