this is Google's problem for not bothering to care about the local laws.

To take it to the next step, wouldn't it depend on where the Google server was located that held the video? If it is in another country that doesn't have the same laws, why wouldn't we charge the ISP that was transporting illegal material into the country? If it is a local law, then putting video of this person is legal until you bring it into the country. It isn't like Google is forcing content into the country.

Surely you don't think x-rays of children in hospitals should be banned? Or pictures of naked kids for medical purposes in files of pediatricians?

I think where you went wrong in your argument is when you equated trained and licensed medical doctors to the savvy motivated airport security personnel...

Also the fuel economy isn't always worse on the automatics. Some autos actually do better than their manual brothers.

Can you explain that? The reason the manual transmission cars get better gas mileage is because it avoids the extra losses of the torque converter. There should not be significant efficiency gains between a planetary and countershaft transmissions. I have a tough time coming up with any circumstances where an automatic can ever get better gas mileage

In the case of the BMW 335d, there is no manual transmission available because they don't make one that can handle the massive amount of torque produced by that engine.

You mean they chose not to make one. Trust me, transmissions exist that can handle much more torque than a BMW will ever put out

PS3 Hacked? 296

Several readers have sent word that George Hotz (a.k.a. geohot), the hacker best known for unlocking Apple's iPhone, says he has now hacked the PlayStation 3. From his blog post: "I have read/write access to the entire system memory, and HV level access to the processor. In other words, I have hacked the PS3. The rest is just software. And reversing. I have a lot of reversing ahead of me, as I now have dumps of LV0 and LV1. I've also dumped the NAND without removing it or a modchip. 3 years, 2 months, 11 days...that's a pretty secure system. ... As far as the exploit goes, I'm not revealing it yet. The theory isn't really patchable, but they can make implementations much harder. Also, for obvious reasons I can't post dumps. I'm hoping to find the decryption keys and post them, but they may be embedded in hardware. Hopefully keys are setup like the iPhone's KBAG."

Apple Patches Massive Holes In OS X 246

Trailrunner7 writes with this snippet from ThreatPost: "Apple's first Mac OS X security update for 2010 is out, providing cover for at least 12 serious vulnerabilities. The update, rated critical, plugs security holes that could lead to code execution vulnerabilities if a Mac user is tricked into opening audio files or surfing to a rigged Web site." Given that content consumers donate significantly less money than content producers, I think getting wide acceptance for significantly reduced copyright terms (or any other similar scheme; my favorite is unlimited term, but with a fee required to sustain copyright after an initial period of a few years, growing linearly as time passes) would pose a problem.

You may want to think about that one again.

Banking in North America is so far behind Europe, it is not even funny. Quite an adaptation when I moved back to Canada.

Europe is not just one country. Here in northern France you could not survive without checks. For me, banking in Europe is 10 years behind that of the US. It is still primarily a cash and check culture here.
