is to swap the memory modules to find out which is causing the problem, if not motherboard. Also i don't see how memory tests running inside an OS can be effective, i'd much rather boot off of a smaller system on a DVD, USB-stick or floppy to run a memory test. Dell servers have those Dell Diagnostics CDs that are very small in memory footprint just in order to run diagnostics on memory. But even they're not perfect so you often have to take memory out and see if you can reproduce errors.

I've been turning my computer off for years when i end for the day, i don't find it a strain. Though so far they've been starting the computers at night somehow, WOL or something, so it hasn't had much effect and i never have to sit through POST and the OS boot.

Submission + - Professor Breaks Bank Security to Prove Point

swehack writes: "Norweigan computer science professor Kjell Jørgen Hole was dissapointed at how his bank handled the security concerns he had. So he took matters into his own hands, and made it a project to break the security as a proof of concept. Along with his students he worked for approximately 100 hours and managed to successfully break the banks security measures, transfer money between accounts without the owner noticing and steal the identity of banking customers. Submission + - Open Source Biometric Punch Clock Solution?

Punch-Drunk Slob writes: I have a project coming up that involves coming up with a solution for an employee time-in/time-out system. Instead of the usual web-based system, such as Enterprise Payroll Systems (http://epayroll.sourceforge.net/), I would like to try out something more "cutting edge" — using biometrics. Basically I just need a simple fingerprint scanner that can be connected via USB (or similar), and leave everything up to software. Are there any existing open source software that fits my requirements?
