I'd make a guess that eating "raw" fish atleast has been a long tradition of hunter/gatherer cultures. Atleast nordic/scandinavian societies have recipes which are considered as food that are typically consumed during holidays - they might not be raw in the same sense as sushi but drying and salted fish are still respected delicasies.

Submission + - Fox stealing photo content off the blogs.

rasjani writes: Remember that company that tried to sue youtube for having some of their content online ? Remember that tv network who airs copyright warnings about every 5 minutes on NFL game ? Yep, its called FOX. And to show how they really feel about copyright laws an d "re-using" other peoples content, i'll let Tracey to describe how she felt when she spotted her dog on FOX.

Earlier this afternoon I was in our kitchen doing dishes, minding my own business. Jamie was in the living room, watching some NFL football.
It was quiet.
Too quiet.
Suddenly, Jamie called to me from the other room, claiming I had to come see something. When I entered the room, he unpaused the broadcast he had been watching (thanks, TiVo!), and immediately I saw the image of an adorable pug, dressed in festive Santa gear, pop up at the bottom of the screen beside FOX's Happy Holiday's ticker. I vaguely remember Jamie saying something to me to the effect of, "Gee, that dog looks a lot like Truman, doesn't it?"

Submission + - How free Web hosters profit from phishing

netbuzz writes: "Free Web hosters profit handsomely from phishing sites, even those they shut down, says one such hoster who contends that he has all but weaned himself off the juice. Scott Smith of Ripway.com says he gave up $10,000 a month in ad revenue — "significant for a family-owned business" — when Ripway really started cracking down on phishers and spammers last year. Aside from the obvious — that no good deed goes unpunished — Smith's account raises this question: Is his diligence an exception or the rule?

Submission + - Literary agent sues Wikimedia Foundation & SFW

julesh writes: "Literary agent Barbara Bauer, listed as one of the 20 worst literary agents by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America and well known for making legal threats has initiated a law suit against a long list of individuals who have reported on her inclusion in the list, including the SFWA, the Wikimedia Foundation, and a number of prominent publishing industry personalities who maintain web sites that discussed her actions. One defendant is named only as "Miss Snark, Literary Agent", a well-known psuedonym of an anonymous blogger. See her Wikipedia article for more details. This action prompted the deletion and then restoration of her Wikipedia article, which is now being considered for deletion again. This raises the question: can you effectively silence criticism of you via litigation, even when the criticism is based on widely published (and almost-certainly true) information?"

Submission + - Council of the EU says: We cannot support Linux

An anonymous reader writes: The Council of the EU has a streaming service to watch the meetings. But the streaming service can be only be used by Mac or MS Windows user. This is because they use wmv for the videos. In the FAQ they express a really strange opinion about this:

"The live streaming media service of the Council of the European Union can be viewed on Microsoft Windows and Macintosh platforms. We cannot support Linux in a legal way. So the answer is: No support for Linux"

An online petition has been set created to create pressure to convince the EU council to change its serve in a way that its platform independent.

Submission + - Fedora Legacy shutting down

An anonymous reader writes: Jesse Keating and David Eisenstein of the Legacy Team sent out a notice to the fedora-legacy-announce mailing list stating that Fedora Legacy is shutting down.

"In case any of you are not aware, the Fedora Legacy project is in the process of shutting down.

The current model for supporting maintenance distributions is being re-examined. In the meantime, we are unable to extend support to older Fedora Core releases as we had planned. As of now, Fedora Core 4 and earlier distributions are no longer being maintained.

Discussions last night on the #Fedora-Legacy channel have brought to light the fact that certain Fedora Legacy properties (servers) may be going away soon, such as the repository at http://download.fedoralegacy.org/ and the build server. Legacy folks need to let us know what they want to be done with the content in the repository mirrors. If you don't speak up, we may find ourselves in a place where 'yum update' commands will fail in the near future for the Red Hat and Fedora Core releases that Legacy has supported in the past.

If there are any issues you need to discuss regarding these events, you are welcome to discuss them on our IRC channel (channel #Fedora-Legacy on the freenode IRC network http://freenode.net/), or on the Fedora Legacy discussion list: https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-leg acy-list

Sincerely,
  Jesse Keating
          and
  David Eisenstein
