Comment Re:Video editing with AviSynth (Score 1) 205

Using AviSynth for 'editing' is very very suboptimal. I love AviSynth for what it does (create wonderful stuff from crappy clips / clean up and other processing). However it is completely ill-suited as a 'editor'. Especially since everything (I know there was a plugin/fork to get directstreamcopy but it is not standard functionality) is recompressed. Lets compare that to something simple like VirtualDub. Load DV AVI clip, select in/out, select DirectStreamCopy for audio and video and save the clip. No quality loss, no recompression - 'rendering' time only limited by speed of your disk. Want to quickly insert titles? Start measuring pixels instead of just putting the title in there with a gui and your mouse.
Yes people have cut whole projects including fadei/o and dissolves with AviSynth but then again I can build a car completely out of engines too.
Why do people always recommend it for editing? It is a EXTREMELY cool piece of software for PROCESSING but I'd never torture myself for using it to edit a project.

Do not login into your account after that for at least 14 days, otherwise it will be re-activated. I do not know if this actually works since I do not have a facebook account. I remember that before this was available facbook would only 'de-activate' your account and you could always come back with all your contacts/infos/photos etc. - but this is supposedly the real deal.

It's not absurd, it's just an exaggeration. If I replaced the word "easy" with "capable" and "any" with "many" would that make you feel better? As in, it's as capable of tinkering as many computers, since it IS a computer, just of a very different form factor from what people are using - the point was it's a hell of a lot closer to a computer than a coffee maker.

Though I REALLY don't understand your tone here, I wasn't trying to trivialize the effort of people who hack around on the iPhone. The post that I replied to was NOT talking about writing silly apps OR tinkering, he was claiming that the iPhone should be thought of as an appliance and people should leave it alone, and you defended him!

Your overreaction to a few misplaced words (when I'm sure I would agree with you in general, and not with the OP) makes it look like you agree with the poster's assertion - that people should stop trying to use the iPhone as anything other than a basic appliance. Based on all of the projects you have worked on, I would think the opposite is true!

Or, government is a multi-headed beast made up of thousands of people, so it's no surprise it acts in a manner that appears schizophrenic. But its desire for power has to come from somewhere - and you only have to look at Peter Mandelson to see that there are certain driving forces in government who are after power for power's sake, not just as a side-effect of wanting something else. And while I think his megolomania is a serious mental problem, he would rationalise all the power-hungry aspects of his character to be good points.

People like Mandelson do seem to be drawn to government - people who believe they know better how to run other people's lives than the people themselves - and when they look around and see other people like themselves it reinforces and justifies their own beliefs. And that concentration of self-importance is what is driving these ever-greater reaches of government control in to our lives. /rant
