Trojan Hides In Pirated Copies of Apple iWork '09 431

CWmike writes "Pirated copies of Apple's new iWork '09 suite that are now available on file-sharing sites contain a Trojan horse that hijacks Macs and leaves them open to further attack, a security company said yesterday. The 'iServices.a' Trojan hitchhikes on iWork '09's installer, said Intego, which makes Mac security software. 'The installer for the Trojan horse is launched as soon as a user begins the installation of iWork, following the installer's request of an administrator password,' Intego said in a warning. Once installed, the Trojan "phones home" to a malicious server to notify the hacker that the Mac has been compromised, and to await instructions."

Roland Piquepaille Dies 288

overheardinpdx writes "I'm sad to report that longtime HPC technology pundit Roland Piquepaille (rpiquepa) died this past Tuesday. Many of you may know of him through his blog, his submissions to Slashdot, and his many years of software visualization work at SGI and Cray Research. I worked with Roland 20 years ago at Cray, where we both wrote tech stories for the company newsletter. With his focus on how new technologies modify our way of life, Roland was really doing Slashdot-type reporting before there was a World Wide Web. Rest in peace, Roland. You will be missed." The notice of Roland's passing was posted on the Cray Research alumni group on Linked-In by Matthias Fouquet-Lapar. There will be a ceremony on Monday Jan. 12, at 10:30 am Paris time, at Père Lachaise.

I don't own a smartphone yet, because I don't want to have to carry anything that costs more than 100 euros in my pocket, but the way I see it the OS and it's apps on the mobile phone are different from your desktop PC. You don't need complex programs like photoshop or word on such a small device. Most of the stuff is pretty simple and will come off the web pretty soon. That means that it will be cheap or free (as in beer) or OSS. So in a while there will be nothing to differentiate significantly the handsets software wise and the only thing will be hardware (especially the looks of it, since we tend to take these things publicly) and easy of use. And price, of course.

Submission + - Baby born with two heads (smh.com.au)

elliot8742 writes: A baby boy born with two heads in southwestern Bangladesh has been placed under police protection because of the curiosity his birth has caused among locals, a doctor said on Wednesday. The boy, named Kiron, was born by Cesarean section on Monday weighing 5.5kg in Keshobpur, 135 kilometres from Dhaka, gynaecologist Mohamad Abdul Bari said. 'He has one stomach and he is eating normally with his two mouths. He has one genital organ and a full set of limbs'.

Submission + - Wine 1.0 code freeze! RC1 in 6 days! (blogspot.com)

twickline writes: "Dan Kegel the Wine 1.0 release manager today posted the below email to the Wine-Development mailing list. The email has changes since last week (with category and votes) and other information that I though might be of interest. Bet you never thought it would happen! The code freeze will be less rigid at first, but we're serious about not destabilizing Wine at this point. So go ahead and post your patches, but make sure you've got your ducks in a row, and don't be surprised if Alexandre pushes back."

Widespread Keyboard Failures on OLPC's XO-1 264

otakuj462 writes "Many participants in OLPC's 'Give 1 Get 1' program of last November are now encountering what has come to be known as the 'stuck key' problem, in which one or more of the keys on their XO-1 laptop's built-in keyboard become stuck in an activated position, or are activated when adjacent keys are pressed. As of January 30th, the official word from OLPC is that the root cause of this problem is unknown because '[t]here are several manufacturers of the keyboards.' ('So far we don't know of any _reliable_ method of fixing the keyboard or the exact root cause.') It is unknown just how widespread this problem currently is, as the 30-day manufacturer's warranty has already expired for most G1G1 participants. However, the OLPC forums are full of reports. OLPC is currently deploying the XO-1 to children in Mongolia and Peru, as well as other developing nations. If OLPC is actively deploying units with known, critical hardware bugs, without a dedicated support infrastructure in place, to children who have never seen a computer before, should they still be considered to be a responsible organization? Did OLPC deploy their hardware too soon?"

Submission + - Mac-Compatible Cloning Achieved for $399 (coderetard.com)

adm_snackbar writes: Back in the late 80s and early 90s when IBM had a stranglehold on PC hardware, many innovative (or sinuous, depends on your view) PC makers were offering PC-compatible IBM clones for sale for cheap, driving down PC prices and benefiting the end consumers. Is the same about to happen to Apple's Mac computer? A company called Prystar is offering a fairly capable x86 Mac clone that they claim can run the Leopard OS for $399, a much better price point with much better specs than a Mac Mini. Is Apple in trouble or is it the other way around?

Submission + - No Slashdot April Fools Jokes in 2008 8

An anonymous reader writes: Slashdot will not be participating in the April Fools jokes this year due to a lawsuit that was settled out of court with undisclosed terms stemming from the 2007 April 1st stunts. The false stories were determined to be too egregious by a yet to be named individual. Slashdot's parent company SourceForge, Inc. found it wiser to settle out of court then a lengthy battle that was obviously going to span several months.

The ponies will be missed.

Submission + - Vista Laptop Compromised in Hacking Contest

An anonymous reader writes: As was reported here on Slashdot, the MacBook Air was the first laptop to fall in the CanSecWest hacking contest. Well, it looks like in the final hours before the end of the contest, the Vista Laptop was also compromised. According to the TippingPoint blog, the laptop was exploited using a new vulnerability in Adobe Flash. Remaining at the very end of the contest unscathed was still the laptop running Ubuntu. Discuss!

Submission + - Yahoo to Reject Microsoft Bid (wsj.com)

vespacide2 writes: Yahoo Inc.'s board plans to reject Microsoft Corp.'s unsolicited $44.6 billion offer to acquire the Web giant, a person familiar with the situation. After a series of meetings over the past week, Yahoo's board determined that the $31 per share offer "massively undervalues" Yahoo, the person said. It also doesn't account for the risks Yahoo would be taking by entering into an agreement that might be overturned by regulators. The board plans to send a letter to Microsoft on Monday, spelling out its position.
