Submission + - Microsoft posts first security fixes for Windows 7

Sam writes: Microsoft today had its largest Patch Tuesday to date, and it includes the first security fixes for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. The vulnerability in question could allow a denial of service attack via a maliciously crafted packet during the NTLM authentication process, as described in Security Bulletin MS09-059. Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2008 are also affected.

Submission + - The End of Moore's Law (insidescience.org)

BuzzSkyline writes: Physicists have found that there is an ultimate limit to the speed of calculations, regardless of any improvements in technology. According to the researchers who found the computation limit, the bound "poses an absolute law of nature, just like the speed of light." While many experts expect technological limits to kick in eventually, engineers always seems to find ways around such roadblocks. If the physicists are right, though, no technology could ever beat the ultimate limit they've calculated. At the current Moore's Law pace, computational speeds will hit the wall in 75 years. A paper describing the analysis, which relies on thermodynamics, quantum mechanics and information theory, appeared in a recent issue of Physical Review Letters.

Submission + - New Dyson Bladeless Fan (wired.com)

TheoGB writes: "According to the Wired article: 'The thing should not work. A gust of air should not be coming form this giant blue Froot Loop. But upon closer inspection, all that’s at work here is some clever engineering tricks. The unit is essentially one of Dyson’s vacuum cleaners working in reverse. The gray base station sucks up air and forces it through the circular blue thing that sits atop the rig. When the air jets through the front of the circle, it creates a suction behind and to the sides that draws more air through the loop and makes the fan more powerful. Dyson claims the Multiplier increases pressure15-fold and spews 118 gallons of air every minute.' Gallons? Get with the programme and use SI units! Oh well, still looks amazing."

Yep-

And that attitude works on a large scale too... one of my company's founders said this about 80 years ago:

"When all is said and done, this business is nothing but a symbol. And when we translate this, we find that it means a great many people think well of its products, and that a great multitude has faith in the integrity of the men who make this product.

"In a very short time, the machines that are now so lively will soon become obsolete. And the big buildings, for all their solidity, must some day be replaced.

"But a business which symbolizes can live so long as there are human beings alive. For it is not built of such flimsy materials as steel and concrete; it is built of human opinions, which may be made to live forever.

"The goodwill of the people is the only enduring thing in any business. It is the sole substance... the rest is shadow."

They take care of us, and we do our best to make the company successful.

Wow, sounds like you've added some great functionality. Interesting read.

I have a T1i- the little brother to the 5d Mark II. Any thought on firmware for this model?

Aside from not being full frame, it also only does 1080P video @ 20FPS... I understand that it *can* do 30 but Canon crippled it as to not encroach on the 5D market. Has anyone seen any "updated" firmware to crank the frames for the T1i? :)

Submission + - High School Teen Hacks System, Changes Grades

lermal writes: "In this article, from the Miami Herald, a high school student in Cooper City, FL used a laptop issued to him by the Broward School Board and changes grades for 20 students, including himself. This (seemingly) wasn't a "troubled" kid either — he was the class president for the Senior class and set to go off to college in the Fall. What goes through someone's mind to do something like this?? It isn't the first, second, or third time it has happened either...."
