Comment Drobo (Score 1) 611

Now first of all, I think it is perfectly fine to use RAID as a backup as long as it is *not the primary storage* of the machine you are backing up.

I have been considering Drobo as a backup device but the high price keeps putting me off. However, unlike standard RAID implementations, Drobo's is unique where it is expandable. Just pop out the smallest disk and pop in a larger one. I think for people as myself that have growing libraries and growing home directories, maintainence of a backup device that easy should be appealing, since it gives us more time to think about how to migrate data off primary storage to a larger disk, or how to add an extra disk to the LVM, etc.

I like this line of thinking. But it's still got to be free to upload videos. How about that you'd have to pay to have unrestricted uploading privileges? If you pay for a Premium YouTube account, you can upload >10min of video and the videos can surpass the 1GB limit.

Plus YouTube can make more features worth paying for. How about a Live YouTube feed? Pay to create one, and it'd be free to watch for anyone else. Something like that.

Another site I regularly peruse, nicovideo.jp, already does something like this.

Unfortunately I don't have any experiences like the OP but for me it was Slackware 10. I think I chose this as I had read it was good for learning the in and outs of linux... I didn't feel like trying anything else so I stayed with it for a while before switching back to windows when I got into college. So I had the general impression anything on linux to install anything you had to download the tarball do the "./configure", "make", "make install" ritual, and run startx for the GUI. I thought it was quite retro.

Finally I made the jump when I moved across the country 3 years ago; I had nothing so I decided on openSUSE 10 and have been pretty happy with it since. I also work with CentOS systems so I'm pretty much a RedHat person.

I wasn't expecting a Shuttle in here, but this is somewhat like my setup, at least hardware-wise. I got a Shuttle SG31G2, Intel Quad core and maxed out 4GB. This thing is very quiet and I'm very happy with it. While using it as my main desktop, I found out that Xen doesn't exactly play well with X for some reason (openSUSE 11.1 64-bit) where if I switched to console mode I couldn't switch back to X!

I ended up using KVM with Xen's network bridge setup scripts; it totally helps. Only thing I would like from a desktop user perspective is a management interface.

Unfortunately, the judge in the case refused to even look at the brief after Jones Day said the brief sided with one party (as most amicus briefs do); he also refused to dismiss the case at the request of BlockShopper. According to TechDirt, the judge even allegedly put pressure on BlockShopper to back down by saying, "Do you know, young man, how much money it's going to cost you to defend yourselves against Jones Day?"

I may not know much, but that's pretty low.

The thing was that there was a backup. According to their podcast, the mac servers were running raid 1 with a firewire backup to a separate machine. However, Mr. Halff said there was file corruption which led to bad backup data, which did not get noticed until the service died. He never did test the backups he made and so now he's got nothing to turn back to.
