Comment Re:No blu-ray (Score 1) 277

I'll admit, I do want an XBox 360, and while it's nice the power supply, wifi, and HDD are all now internal, what I am waiting on is blu-ray. I want it more as a media extender/STB more than anything else, primarily for Hulu and Netflix, and possibly for Rockband 3 once the "real" keyboard comes out.

You want it primarily for Hulu and Netflix, but Blu-ray is a deal breaker? I actually don't really blame them for not having it. The direction is clearly heading more into streaming for media - despite having a ps3 (and a 360), I don't own and have never rented a Blu-ray disc, and don't see that changing anytime soon.

That's all fine and well, except the new revision won't be compatible with external hard drives. Sooo...yeah.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure you can just transfer your profile, saved games, arcade games to a regular old USB flash drive and then transfer all that stuff to a new console.

I'm getting really bored with all the hype flowing from Google lately. What with Chrome OS and Google TV, there seems to be an awful lot of fuss being made over what in both cases is essentially vaporware. Anyone having tried the latest Chromium OS builds (the code base from which Chrome OS will be built) will see that this project has a very long way to go before it is anything like usable.

Agreed. I also don't really understand the appeal of Chrome OS - it's only a browser. If this gets you excited, install the Chrome browser and fullscreen it - tadda!

It's a good thing you're here to call out bullshit on Slashdot! I mean, Microsoft contending it invented all this in such a _cowardly_ way...oh wait, FTFA:

Microsoft's research group isn’t the first to work on a sleep proxy – or even the only one presenting sleep proxy research at Usenix – but Microsoft contends that most previous work has evaluated sleep proxies only in small testbeds or simulations.

Phew, so Microsoft Research is presenting a research paper on this subject. Crisis averted.

How about AHA's logos on normal sporting equipment. Footballs, etc?

Probably because there isn't any reason to do so - it's implicit in that the AHA encourages physical activity. Is someone going to see the AHA logo on a football and suddenly realize that it might be healthy to play sports? Doubtful.

Plus, there is the differentiation factor. Is there any reason why the AHA would hypothetically endorse one brand of sporting equipment over another? No, they are essentially all the same from their perspective. The value of attaching the logo to the Wii is that it might cause parents to choose that one over the others available because it's the healthiest choice available i.e. in this case it does matter what they put their weight behind.

So, your advice is to be a quiet, passive-aggressive loner that keeps themselves apart from the group? Please do your coworkers a favor and quit now.

Seriously, though, the cynical answer is always that you aren't at work to make friends, but in my experience work is so much better when your coworkers are indeed friends. I worked several years in tech support while in university and the only thing that made it bearable was the people I worked with. Obviously, you can go too far - you don't want to spend all day talking to people and not get your job done - but the idea that you shouldn't be friendly since you're at work is absurd.

Because when you do that, the current never stops being current. Apple have a habit of forcing old, useless techs out the door... They did it with floppies, they did it with parallel ports, they did it with PS/2 connectors, and now they're doing it with flash.

My motherboard still has a PS/2 connector, but it's not like you can buy PS/2 keyboards anymore. You can push future technology and still not be a douche to everyone using the old stuff.

I said nothing about hardware abstraction...I don't know what planet you've been on, but 10 years ago on this planet if several of your application servers not only crashed, but completely disappeared never to return again, that would be cause for alarm. Now (due to a coupling of lowered expectations of vendor product quality, thanks to China et. al, and the natural progression of the industry), one just creates the applications with the idea in mind that the roles are what is important, not the devices that may or may not from one moment to the next be fulfilling the roles.

Yup, comprehension sure has gone downhill.

Comment Re:Singapore (Score 1) 66

"Cloud computing" is quite real; it's an entirely different paradigm involving ephemeral hosts where you monitor and protect roles/functions, and the machines that provide those functions are completely unimportant. It's unlike anything that the industry has ever done, and whether you call it "cloud computing" or something else, it is in fact something different that deserves some different type name, whatever that name may be.

Hardware abstraction is new? Here I was thinking that it was a central theme in computing for pretty sizable chunk of time now.
