I doubt this project will ever do more than be a shining example of how not to do innovation. I'll bet that a small focused team, privately funded, will figure out a path to safe and large scale fusion before ITER does. Perhaps Bill Gates will lead the charge. Future nuclear tech holds promise but the generation of fission reactors deployed today requires an independent and transparent regulatory regime to watch over it. Fukushima, Chernobyl, and Three Mile Island tell us we don't have this today. Everyone of these disasters began with a coverup. Therefore we do not have the moral authority to run today's generation of fission nukes.

Jurors are free people. They may not behave like the programmed robots the judges or attorneys would like them to but this wild card is purposefully designed into the system as a last barrier to injustice. For example, if I was on a jury in a death penalty case I would not issue a sentence of death during the sentencing phase. I am incapable of doing so because I know the death penalty system in this country is fundamentally unjust. My sense of personal integrity would not allow it.

I'm a supporter of efforts like the development of these windows. The biggest difference in this world between the haves and the have nots is access to affordable energy. If you get that, you get clean water, refrigeration, air conditioning, transportation, etc.

This is why I am in favor of technology developments that focus on energy generation. I'm against using state power to artificially drive conservation because most of the time that really means making access to energy more expensive. The end result of that sort of conservation means that only rich people will have access to energy and the gaps between rich and poor will get wider. No thanks.

In order to safely operate today's generation of nuclear fission reactors, you need the operators and regulators to be transparent and competent. The folks running this Fukushima travesty are neither transparent nor competent.

Therefore I am forced to conclude that the human race in 2012 does not have the moral credibility to be trusted to operate nuclear fission reactors.
