Also it is an environmentally friendly way of tracking time. It doesn't work up north though.
Polar night is long up there. But then you can use stars to tell time. Even little further south when days are 8 hours long it kind of defeats the purpose of having a sun dial. Then again I would like to hibernate through winter.

I'm not saying Israel is trying to murder all Palestinians at once. Just get them out of Gaza and West Bank so that they can take over, which for the most part they have already done. They control the water and all of the militarily important sites with settlements.
There are many refugees that have been displaced internally by this and earlier conflicts. Many more palestinians have fled to Egypt, Jordania, Syria and other countries.

Even if you kill "just" 1 million in 60 years. It is still ethnic cleansing. A slow agonizing ethnic cleansing but still.

I cannot understand how you can defend that.

I am not defending the actions of Hamas/PLO/others. They need to stop. Israel needs to stop.

Let's bring to the forefront the normal people who are trying to build a peaceful future in the midst of all this killing. Normal peace loving people don't have a voice in the current media environment.
That voice is being stolen by terrorist organizations and terrorist states. Like Hamas and Israel.
That voice needs to go to organizations like:
Ta'ayush
Rabbis for Human Rights
Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions
Bat Shalom
Al-Awda

I didn't imply either. I would disagree with the second implication and, at best, I would be undecided about the first, not being a military genius.

Well anyway that is the sense that I got from the language that you used.

No kidding? I'm writing a slashdot post, not a book.

Well it is important to this discussion to note the YEARS of human rights violations and massacres perpetrated by Israel in occupied territory. Which Gaza and West Bank Still are.
Regardless of what US media tells you. There are settlements through out Gaza and West Bank. Still occupied illegally.

That's got to be some kind of Godwin, right there. Israel is hardly rounding up every Palestinian, Muslim, Gazan or any group and sending them to death camps. They are targeting specific people, and because of the tactics being used by both sides, there are casualties. Of course there shouldn't be innocent deaths, but nor should there be starvation in the world. That is not a justification for the collateral damage... I'll leave that to others to try to work out, but to equate just another round in a tit-for-tat that's been going on for decades as being an ethnic cleansing is both ludicrous and spurious.

I disagree. Please watch this documentary. And you'll have a very different perpective on the issues.
http://www.tinyurl.com/7uwygq

This isn't tit-for-tat. This is illegal military occupation. That is slowly but surely conducting ethnic cleasing of the occupied territory of Palestinian people. For a simple proof of this try comparing the number of deaths in the conflict. The Israeli civilian deaths that have caused the latest round of cleansing was somewhere around 10-30. And that is being generous. Number of palestinian civilians killed is over 850 by last count. I'd call that an ethnic cleansing by any standard.
A few examples of the latest Israeli tactics:
Rounding up people in buildings and then shooting at them.
Shelling cities.
Shooting at schools where they know civilians are gathering.(And then lying about it. And getting caught lying.)

I believe that the 1967 war began when Israel pre-emptively attacked Egypt.
1948 borders are the ones that I believe are most relevant ones. And there have been numerous other conflicts besides 1948 and 1967.
Israel has not withdrawn from all illegal settlements. Deemed illegal by UN and international law that is.

I disagree with your implication that there is a military solution to this crisis.
And your implication that Israel has done nothing wrong.
I disagree with your interpretation of the events of 1967. Also you have limited your opinion to two conflicts (1948 and 1967) when in fact there have been numerous others. And the causes of those conflicts are not so black and white. Nor are the consequences.

And whether Hamas is a terrorist organization or not does not change the fact that it was democratically elected to lead the Palestinian people. There is a reason for that you know.
Both sides are using terror tactics. And Palestinian people will resort to extremists when their human rights are violated consistently.
Is it right? No. But neither is the cause of it.

I think it is sad that one of the most mistreated people in the world recovers from a holocaust and then does the almost exact same thing to others.

Israel has not withdrawn from all of the colonies that it has built illegally.

Hamas is not without fault. No side in the conflict is. That is why all sides must take part in the building of peace.

Terrorists firing rockets into Israel killing few people now and then.

Or Israel rolling tanks into urban areas killing dozens of people seeking refuge in schools.

There is a lot of blame to go around.
But that will not solve the issue.

Nor will military support to either side.
There is no military solution.
Non-violence and a working peace process that involves the people and not just the heads of state is the only real solution.

Israel and Palestine are not individuals. They much more than that. Making analogies about individuals will not work. It is oversimplification.

Stop building colonies on other peoples land.
Leave the colonies that it has already built on other peoples land.

Luke warm negotiations are better than open war.

There is a history of atrocities on both sides. Then negotiations. Then assassinations and terrorism. Then negotiations. And now open war.

Non-violence is the only way forward. Anything less than that is a waste of time and resources.

The truth is that the situation there is so screwed that it will take a long time to unscrew it.
About five generations I think.
It can be done. But it will take a lot that oh so rare resource of "political will" on both sides.

Right now it is nowhere is sight.

And no outside intervention can fix things. It can help but there will need to be an internal will for peace.

WV Voters Say Machines Are Switching Votes 900

An anonymous reader writes "Three Putnam County voters say electronic voting machines changed their votes from Democrats to Republicans when they cast early ballots last week. This is the second West Virginia county where voters have reported this problem. Last week, three voters in Jackson County told The Charleston Gazette their electronic vote for 'Barack Obama' kept flipping to 'John McCain.'"

Submission + - Air pollution creates troubles for Bejing Olympics

morpheus83 writes: The President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) yesterday gave a statement that some of the events at the 2008 Beijing Olympics could be postponed due to air pollution. He said, "Sports with short durations would not be a problem, but endurance sports like cycling are examples of competitions that might be postponed or delayed." Billions of dollars have been spent to reduce the pollution but to no effect. Even extreme steps such as shifting of factories out-of-town to even shutting some down have been taken, but non-stop construction and heavy car sales are just increasing air pollution by the day.

Submission + - Google gives Linux its patent protection

Rob writes: Search giant Google has promised not to use its patent portfolio against the Linux operating system and other open source projects by becoming the first end-user licensee of the Open Invention Network. By joining the OIN Google has licensed over 100 patents from the non-profit organization, which was formed in November 2005 by IBM, Novell, Red Hat, Sony and Phillips to stockpile intellectual property for use as a defensive weapon. "Linux plays a vital role at Google, and we're strongly committed to supporting the Linux developer community," noted the company's open source programs manager, Chris DiBona.
