I run Fedora 31, KDE spin and a desktop with a Skylake i7-6700 (over 4 years old) processor with 16GB of DDR4 RAM. Of course, I do have an SSD for my system disk which improves performance dramatically and IMHO for anyone building their own desktop this is essential. When running multiple windows and including watching a video (eg. YouTube or even VLC) my load average may go to about 6% (doing this now as a test) although if I run applications like Handbreak the load can jump to over 60% with core temperatures of about 70 deg C and about 90% CPU utilisation.

I should note that I have an LG 31.5" HDR 4K monitor and my load is still around 6% even with a 4K display output. I should also note that I running multiple browser (Chrome) tabs (5 currently).

I did try Windows 10 in a virtual machine when it first came out and I did not like the way it was contacting machines in other countries although those machines were owned by Microsoft. Of course I have not used Windows 10 since then.

In the case of corporations, it is essential to have a documented, testable disaster recovery plan that will work under all possible scenarios. Of course the more complex a disaster recovery plan the more it will cost so you have to weigh the pros and cons, but at the top of the list of any plan should be backups and testable recoveries.

Honest question - what is inside Linux or BSD to prevent a user space malware application from running and encrypting all the files you have r/w access to?

Basically any OS can be compromised, especially if you log in as a system administrator. Linux, Unix and even MS-Windows allow the user to log in as a "normal" user (i.e. one without any system admin privileges) although many people will log in (especially with MS-Windows) as a user with privileges which can be catastrophic if they get "conned" into instaling malware.

Linux and Unix are fairly safe against malware which is aimed against MS-Widows users although it must be remembered that no operating system is 100% safe. It is always a good idea no matter the OS used to have a documented disaster recovery plan with the first step being to regularly backup your system and to test your recovery methods (most users, especially those using MS-Windows don't do this).

In a corporate environment, it is especially lax to the point of being criminal not to have a documented and testable disaster recovery plan.

As for a home environment, it should go without saying that a regular backup, especially of all user data, is essential. If you have a Linux distribution you could get away with not backing up your operating system especially if it is on a separate disk (I use an SSD for this). Of course, this does not absolve you from documenting all relevant applications that you install on your OS.

In my case, it takes approximately 15 minutes to install the OS (Fedora 31 KDE spin) from first principles (essential in the case of malware) and about 20 minutes to install all relevant applications. Sure it is possible to back up the operating system (I would do this in a corporate environment to keep them CEO's happy) but in the case of malware, a first principle recovery is usually the safest and surprisingly quick to do.

It must be noted that if you need to recover user data the process can take many hours depending on the amount of data that needs to be recovered.

The PS3 and PS4 controllers have motion control and that translates to over 200 million dual shock controllers even if you assume that no one brought a second controller. Of course, not many games are developed that make use of motion control but the feature is there if the developer wants to use it. Actually, with the PS4 some menus in the system and in some games give you the option of using motion control to rapidly select data.

The dual shock 4 has a touchpad which is actually used in many games whether it is just for the button or in some cases as a multi-touch device.

From an enterprise perspective, you as the system admin may have to change some recommended systemd parameter(s) (e.g."Oracle") but normally you don't have to worry about it.

We could just look around and get any relevant messages. Rather, they work on the basis of funneling access to G-d through them and do not really believe in a personal G-d for everyone.

Personally, I think religion is one of Man's darkest creations.

It is not just Christian Apologists it is all religious Apologists of different faiths.

It is always fascinating to watch religious Apologists cherry-pick, deflect, gish gallop, tapdance and generally lie just to prove in their mind or for their faith's believers rather than accept demonstratable facts. Linux users do have a choice and if people are interested, the following discusses 33 web browsers so we could add one more to the mix. Still to be fair if you have been a Microsoft OS user it would make it so much easier to transition to a Linux distro if you could have applications that you are familiar with such as MS Office, Edge Browser and third party products such as Photoshop, just to name a few.

Of course, a person who is a dedicated Microsoft ecosystem user would have a difficult, if not impossible time transitioning to a Linux distribution and having to relearn equivalent applications such a using LibreOffice instead of Microsoft Office and The Gimp instead of Photoshop. Yes, they are plenty of Linux equivalents to Microsoft and Third-party applications but many won't want to make the switch so having a Microsoft application running natively on a Linux distribution can ease the transition and in some respects, Microsoft actually wins as well since they would still be selling their products.

The element "sulfur" has low toxicity to humans however the compounds of sulfur can be extremely toxic. The result of burning a high sulfur fuel normally results in high yields of "sulfur dioxide" which when added to water results in "sulfurous acid" . Of course, if you think "sulfurous acid" is ok for life then allow me to mix up a batch for you.

I don't see what the big deal is here. Sulfur is fertilizer. In the air, it can cause acidic rain, which may be undesirable for your buildings and cars, but in the soil or in the ocean it seems like sulfur should be just another fertilizer making plants grow faster/better. And as we all know, plants growing absorb CO2, so the complaint that dumping sulfur in the ocean causes the ocean to release CO2 seems temporary at best.

Sometimes environmentalists don't think things through very well and go too far with their temper tantrums.

Maybe you should learn some basic chemistry. Sulfur dioxide plus water (ie. Sea Water) results in sulfurous acid . Of course, sulfurous acid is not a bad a sulphuric acid (see "Car batteries") but it does leed to the acidification of the world's oceans and seas which is pretty bad.

Submission + - Developer Takes Down Ruby Library After He Finds Out ICE Was Using It (zdnet.com)

An anonymous reader writes: A software engineer pulled a personal project down after he found out that one of the companies using it had recently signed a contract with the U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The engineer, Seth Vargo, cited the ICE's "inhumane treatment, denial of basic human rights, and detaining children in cages," as the reason for taking down his library. The project was called Chef Sugar, a Ruby library for simplifying work with Chef, a platform for configuration management. Varga developed and open-sourced the library while he worked at Chef, and the library was later integrated into Chef's source code.

Earlier this week, a Twitter user discovered that Chef was selling $95,000-worth of licenses through a government contractor to the ICE. The news didn't go well with Vargo, who, yesterday, September 19, took down the Chef Sugar library from both GitHub and RubyGems, the main Ruby package repository, in a sign of protest. "I have a moral and ethical obligation to prevent my source from being used for evil," Vargo wrote on the now-empty Chef Sugar GitHub repository. Vargo's actions didn't go unnoticed, and in a blog post published later in the day, Chef Software CEO Barry Crist said the incident impacted "production systems for a number of our customers." The Chef team fixed the issue by scouring some of the older Chef Sugar source code and re-uploading it on their own GitHub account.
