Pac-Man's Ghost Behavior Algorithms 194

An anonymous reader writes "This article has a very interesting description of the algorithms behind the ghosts in Pac-Man. I had no idea about most of this information, but that's probably because it's difficult to study the ghosts when I die every 30 seconds. Quoting: 'The ghosts are always in one of three possible modes: Chase, Scatter, or Frightened. The "normal" mode with the ghosts pursuing Pac-Man is Chase, and this is the one that they spend most of their time in. While in Chase mode, all of the ghosts use Pac-Man's position as a factor in selecting their target tile, though it is more significant to some ghosts than others. In Scatter mode, each ghost has a fixed target tile, each of which is located just outside a different corner of the maze. This causes the four ghosts to disperse to the corners whenever they are in this mode. Frightened mode is unique because the ghosts do not have a specific target tile while in this mode. Instead, they pseudorandomly decide which turns to make at every intersection.'"

Submission + - Microsoft invests in open source software company (networkworld.com)

joabj writes: In what may be its first investment in an open source software company, Microsoft has quietly invested in TurboHercules, which maintains the Hercules open source IBM mainframe emulator. Perhaps the potential for purloining customers from the juicy mainframe market outstrips any misgivings Microsoft may have about open source. You might remember TurboHercules: In March, it filed an antitrust complaint with the EU over IBM's tying of its mainframe OSes with its hardware.

Student Googles Himself, Finds He's Accused of Murder 184

University of Florida student Zachary Garcia was more than a little surprised to find out he was wanted for murder after Googling his name. It turns out the police were looking for a different man but had mistakenly used Garcia's photo. From the article: "Investigators originally released a driver's license photo of Zachary Garcia — spelled with an 'A' — but it was Zachery Garcia — spelled with an 'E'— who was charged in connection with the crime."

Submission + - Could open source render Facebook the next AOL? (computerworld.com)

joabj writes: Now that Facebook has amassed more than 500 million users, a growing number of open source social networking developers are wondering if Facebook's photo sharing, status updates and other features wouldn't work better as Internet-wide standardized services. At the OSCON conference last week, the head of Identi.ca, an open source Twitter-like microblogging service, likened today's social networking services to the enormously proprietary online services of the early 1990s, like AOL or Prodigy. He suggested that just like SMTP and Sendmail standardized what were previously propriety e-mail services, so too could open source social networking stacks, like OStatus, render walled garden services like Facebook obsolete.

Submission + - Google recognizes the Hella- prefix (google.com)

joabj writes: For at least one search query, Google has recognized the proposed hella- prefix for numbers in the 10^27 scale. A California physics major is lobbying the scientific community to make the California slang term the next official SI prefix, for the as-of-yet unnamed 10 to the 27th scale, following the yotta, zetta, exa and peta. ""There is no question as to what you mean," he has said. "If you say something weighs hellagrams, you'd think 'Well that's a lot of grams.'" One day will we be measuring our bandwidth in Hellabits?

According to the New York Times, CougarLife.com had been paying Google $100,000 a month since October. The Mountain View company has now cancelled the contract, saying that the dating site is 'nonfamily safe.'"

Submission + - CodePlex Hires Ex-Microsoftie as Technical Lead (networkworld.com)

joabj writes: The CodePlex foundation has hired a technical director, Stephen Walli, who will act both as a concierge for existing projects housed on the site, and as a shepherd to bring in new projects. A longtime open source veteran, Walli was one of the developers of Interix, software for running Unix programs on Windows NT servers. Microsoft bought Walli's company, Softway in 1999. Although set up last year by Microsoft to be an independent entity, CodePlex has been criticized of being too Microsoft-centric.

First MySQL 5.5 Beta Released 95

joabj writes "While MySQL is the subject of much high-profile wrangling between the EU and Oracle (and the MySQL creator himself), the MySQL developers have been quietly moving the widely-used database software forward. The new beta version of MySQL, the first publicly available, features such improvements as near-asynchronous replication and more options for partitioning. A new release model has been enacted as well, bequeathing this version the title of 'MySQL Server 5.5.0-m2.' Downloads here."

Submission + - How do you keep yourself motivated at work?

scarabza writes: I work for a well known technology company and I'm finding it very difficult to stay motivated. The reason for this is that the company is very slow moving, worse than a single limbed sloth! They tend to procrastinate when making decisions, and spend money on software that is often technical surpassed by freely available open source. In this day and age it's not easy to find alternative employment and as a result I find myself stuck between a rock and hard place. Are any other /.'ers in a similar position? I'm interested to hear what they have to say about the subject.

Submission + - SPAM: All in one! Asterisk PBX on a PCI card

voiptoday writes: Asterisk PBX on a PCI card with integrated telephony ports, hardware based echo cancellation, Ethernet interface and Compact Flash port.PCI card by Positron Telecom is a leap forward in the telecommunications card market. It is the first of its kind to offer the functionality of Asterisk PBX on a card with integrated telephony ports, hardware based echo cancellation and Ethernet interface.

By integrating the Linux, Asterisk, Echo Canceller, Ethernet (for PCI and LAN), Telephone ports (FXS) and Gateway functionality (FXO) we have created the first standalone solution that can be installed in any PC and by interfacing Ethernet to the PCI bus we have also made it an ANY Operating System solution – no special drivers required.
