Comment Re:I am sick of your bundling (Score 1) 12

I'd take my business elsewhere too, if other businesses would ship with anything other than USPS or FedEx. Amazon uses UPS, which delivers on time most of the time. FedEx has had several of my packages delayed, failed to attempt to deliver packages once they're out on route, failed to find my address due to whatever godawful mapping software they use, and failed to heed signs posted to NOT leave packages at a blocked door. USPS is even worse, I've experienced delays of over a week beyond scheduled delivery, as my packages get trapped in the Memphis distribution center. I've been using other stores lately because Amazon has slowed down their shipping since COVID started, and I have to say I miss being able to get my packages on time.

The selection probably would have been pretty good 15+ years ago. Right now looks like mostly a bunch of old SNK games from the 90's and early 2000's, as well as stuff for other games, like League of Legends and GTA Online. Disappointing haul. At least the Epic games store (Santa take its black soul) gives out quality games.

It's also nothing new, they already gave all this stuff away to anyone with a Twitch account. Not news.

Doubtful. The games in question seem to be delivered through the Amazon Games app on Windows, not on iOS devices. Not sure if there's a version for Macs or not, but the games in question aren't generally all that great. I can say I got a few through Twitch before Amazon made coupling unnecessary, and I haven't played one of them.

Comment Re:Deja Vu (Score 4, Informative) 155

I just got this. It did install automatically and run through the setup process, which allowed me to turn off privacy-invasive settings. But it's a replacement for the old Edge, the one built into Windows, and for Internet Explorer before that, and since some Windows apps use API's that deliver through the built-in browser, I think it's a good thing to present the privacy options instead of just quietly replacing the old crufty versions of IE and Edge.

The first attempt to "migrate" is an offer to import settings from other browsers, so in case you actually do want to use it you want to keep your bookmarks. The option to import nothing is there, which is what I clicked.

As far as pinning, it's a bit annoying if you use something else like I do, but it's nothing crazy and takes literally 1 second to undo.

It didn't hijack my default browser. This is the most misleading part of this post. Firefox was not disturbed and was still my default browser. It may have asked to be default if I had actually used it instead of just closing it once setup was done, though most browsers will ask that, and you can always say no.

As for not being able to uninstall it, the OS web view components use Edge, since it replaced the old Edge which replaced Internet Explorer. Removing it would either break things, or just delete the bookmarks while leaving the actual browser in place. Neither is particularly desirable.

My mom still uses the original iPhone SE. This will probably be her next choice when she decides to upgrade.

It is indeed hard to find a decent phone that will fit her pocket. That's the real lure of this phone - it's easier for her to handle and pocket than, say, a Pixel 3a, which is almost an inch bigger diagonally.

Honestly, I'd be satisfied with disabling the sound at this point. In my experience, Chrome on mobile, at least when used embedded into another app like Facebook, continues to autoplay videos with sound. My mother can be on Facebook one moment, then click a link, and it will go to a page with noisy autoplaying video. This despite me having disabled autoplay for her in both Facebook and Chrome. Drives her up the wall, and annoys the crap out of me that I can do nothing about it for her. Not sure what my next step will be on that one.

There is some value to notifications. I actually have web apps that I want to receive notifications from, especially on mobile, so I can for instance do other things while waiting for a response without keeping the web app in the foreground. The problem is more that every web developer and their dog thinks their trashy site is important enough to get notifications from. The worst offenders are clickbait sites that offer nothing of value at all.

An equal problem to this is autoplaying videos. Chrome needs to follow Firefox in disabling them. I have a local news site that autoplays videos on every freaking web page. Nothing like sitting in a doctor's waiting room when suddenly the phone starts blaring audio from a video that I wasn't interested in in the first place.

They should be encouraged to learn to code, IF THEY WANT TO. Or maybe to take up any number of other career paths. Provide them with the resources they need to pursue their own futures. For some, they may learn to code. Others may pursue fields where their existing skills are more applicable, like construction. Not everyone has to learn to code, but everyone should be afforded the opportunity to succeed.

So yes, let them code if they want. But also, let them operate heavy machinery if they want, let them build bridges and roads if they want, or go to college, or start their own businesses. They obviously aren't afraid of hard work, and I think that is the one skill, more than any other, that will get them wherever they want to go.

Comment The only time I've done it (Score 1) 138

The only time I've done it, is when I leave the news on TV and go to my computer while the commercials are playing. I usually forget to go back to the TV so it winds up running for 30 minutes or more while I'm doing other things. I don't think I ever really spend time really split between two devices, unless I'm doing something that requires it - like fiddling with an app on the phone while looking up instructions on the PC, as I did when I installed my smart plugs (pretty sure even God himself couldn't have read the tiny print on the instruction sheet).

I also wonder if there might be an issue with the wording in the survey. There's a big difference between "have you ever had another device on at the same time as your TV" and "do you watch the TV at the same time as you use another device." The alternative is that the zombie iPocalypse has already doomed humanity.

As someone who once had internet though Wild Blue, now Viasat, I can say their service is the ultimate in suck. The data caps were heinously low, and the latency made dialup seem like a good deal. I switched the moment 5 megabit DSL (up to 10 now) became available, and never once looked back. 25 down may look good on paper, but the devil's in the data cap. A large Windows update these days could probably knock you out of data for a month.
