Life expectancy is probably the most misunderstood and misused metric ever. It should be removed and replaced by better metrics. The infant mortality rate makes the number quite useless.
Also the same factors that lower infant mortality also lower mortality from high age, which causes the metric to look like what people expect, which causes even more confusion and misuse.
