Submission + - Steorn's Orbo a Bust, Demo Postponed (steorn.com)

fragmentate writes: After weeks and weeks of waiting for the universe to fold over on itself when Steorn's Orbo Free-Energy Technology started to spin up indefinitely, and perpetually, the demonstration had to be postponed. In spite of their ability to suspend the law of Conservation of Energy they couldn't control the heat generated from camera lighting. How hard would it be for these guys to just video tape it over a period of days and upload to YouTube instead of putting so many people at inconvenience?

Steorn's news page states:

Sean McCarthy CEO stated that 'technical problems arose during the installation of the demonstration unit in the display case on Wednesday evening. These problems were primarily due to excessive heat from the lighting in the main display area. Attempts to replace those parts affected by the heat led to further failures and as a result we have to postpone the public demonstration until a future date.'

...followed by much apologizing. Probably also followed by much ridicule, and some gnashing of teeth.

Submission + - Sun Open Sources Solaris Cluster

fragmentate writes: "
Sun announces the open sourcing of Solaris Cluster, an integrated software platform that provides high availability clustering and disaster recovery to key business applications. Called Open High Availability (HA) Cluster, the open sourced code will be made available to developers in three phases through a new HA Clusters community on OpenSolaris.org. With Open HA Cluster, Sun provides community members with a solid technology base to support innovation on cluster and high availability systems. Donating this cluster code to the OpenSolaris Project further cements Sun's position as the top contributor of code to the open source software community.

"The former senator and actor has hired his production staff, orchestrated the advance publicity and carefully worked his audience, which is desperate for a star to lead the GOP out of its funk." Submission + - Global warming debunked?

limbicsystem writes: "I'm a scientist. I like Al Gore. I donate to the Sierra club, I bicycle everywhere and I eat granola. And I just read a very convincing article in the UK Telegraph that makes me think that the 'scientific consensus' on global warming is more than a little shaky. Now IANACS (I am not a climate scientist). And the Telgraph is notoriously reactionary. Can anyone out there go through this piece and tell me why it might be wrong? Because it seems to be solid. well-researched and somewhat damning of a host of authorities (the UN, the editors of Nature, the Canadian Government) who seem to have picked a side in the global warming debate without looking at the evidence. Hey, while I'm at it, why not look at the environmental cost of the Toyota Prius ;)."
Democrats

Submission + - Orson Scott Card on being a pro-Bush Democrat

Belisarivs writes: Just in time for the mid-terms, Orson Scott Card argues that the Democrats can't see the forest through the trees. Starting off by saying " . . . as a Democrat, for whom the Republican domination of government threatens many values that I hold to be important", he goes on to say, ". . . there are no values that matter to me that will not be gravely endangered if we lose this war. And since the Democratic Party seems hellbent on losing it — and in the most damaging possible way — I have no choice but to advocate that my party be kept from getting its hands on the reins of national power, until it proves itself once again to be capable of recognizing our core national interests instead of its own temporary partisan advantages." But this is more than just an anti-endorsement, as Card goes on in this lengthy piece to provide a very different view of world events to what is being spun out of both the right and left wings.
