In the book Born to Run McDougall illustrates the theory that no only are those Tarahumara not unique, but the unique trait that let the entire human race survive when coming down from the trees (and get enough protein to build our large brains) was the ability to run extremely long distances and utilize persistence hunting. Here's a nice little video on the tarahumara and touching on some themes in the book...

over active people also wear out their body parts with the exertion. there is a happy medium though and i think that it just needed to be clarified. if you run several super marathons every year its going to kill you early... if you run a 5k it's all good.

What is your source for that? I think these people would disagree...

That's nothing! Did you see the episode where they compared it to being tired!

With the current social norm seeming to be, that not sleeping is somehow "cool" (instead of moronic), and drinking loads of coffee to stay awake as long as possible. one must assume that the majority of people are constantly overtired and not fit to drive a car.

Compared to that, things like 0.08% BAC are almost not even noteworthy!

Why the hell we're testing for BAC instead of the actual ability to react to reflexes and make good decisions is still beyond me...

Instead of a breathalyzer, they should invent a portable driving game console, and demand a certain level of proficiency in that....

I'd recommend the distro Siduction (basically Debian Unstable with a few tweaks - previously Sidux->AptoSid) and use the "smxi" script to run updates, install virtualbox/vmware and graphics drivers. I've been doing this on my desktop for years (through the above mentioned distro iterations), and it's worked great. If you install apt-listbugs, and keep an eye on the forums before big dist-upgrades, you get always current software with very few breakages (I've only had a couple of major ones in those years).

The problem is, this isn't a story about stopping the government, you're mouthing off against positions that are widely popular. Restricting assault weapons and the sale of bulk ammunition has more than 50% support in the U.S. You are talking about killing me, and your other neighbors, because you have decided that your minority opinion is more valid than the majority opinion. ....... The conceit of your argument is that the "jackbooted thug" isn't a human being. It's BS.

The conceit of YOUR opinion is that the current minority opinion will never be the majority opinion in the future. I don't believe that the grandparent post is suggesting that the time for a rebellion is NOW... However, if, in the future, the government gradually becomes more and more oppresive, there may come a time when a tipping point is reached. This would be a time when a huge majority opinion would be in favor of potentially giving their own lives for their freedom, and would be opposing the small minority of tyrannical oppressors. I doubt anyone in their right mind would propose trying to overthrow the current US government. It is not time for that, and hopefully that time would never come, but it is not outside the realm of possibility for it to one day arrive, especially without vigilant watchmen.

America's first and deadliest school massacre - in 1927 - no games or guns involved. I wish I had mod points today to mod up all your posts BlueStrat. You are exactly correct in all your statements. People forget that our founding fathers overthrew their oppressive government through use of their militia (common citizenry), and wanted to insure that ability for future generations in the event that the government they forged went awry. I believe in that idea, that it is our responsibility to our own freedom to keep our government in line, if necessary. I'd like to see no gun control on non-criminal US citizens. The one thing I worry about is our guns crossing over our borders to arm drug gangs in other countries (I've seen several very troublesome documentaries on that topic). So, I might accept more stringent regulations when it comes to background checks for certain weapons even when sold by a private individual to help limit this issue. (I'd also legalize all drugs to cut off funds to those same drug gangs, but that's another issue)
