Submission + - RIM offers Blackberry users a $100 apology full of (rim.com)

rdoherty writes: Blackberry has decided the best way to apologize for last week's service woe's is to give everyone $100 in premiums apps. RIM's service outage affected blackberry users' ability to receive BBM/e-mail/internet access during part of a 4-day rolling outage that affected blackberry users around the world. Some users weren't able to use those features during the outage, while others (like myself) only experienced the occasional delay in receiving e-mail. The premium apps give-away is not only an apology to crackberry addicts, but it is also a way for RIM to show-off their premium software. The give-away includes vlingo (an app that functions a lot like Siri that has been one of the more expensive apps found on blackberry phones since 2009), EA classics like (SIMS 3, Bejeweled), Gameloft games (N.O.V.A., Texas Hold’em Poker 2), a Photo Editor, a handful of iSpeech apps, and many others. They even plan on add new apps to the list until the end of the calendar year.

Submission + - Hemopurifier filters out HIV from patient

rdoherty writes: After over 10 years in development, the Hemopurifier is now the first therapeutic device to drastically reduce viral load in an HIV patient. Aethlon has just announced the results for their "first-in-man" study of the Hemopurifier to treat HIV. Their Hemopurifier is a tube the size of a pen that connects to a patient's arm to filter their blood. It was shown to remove other viruses (dengue, hepatitis C, west nile virus, smallpox, 1918 spanish flu & H5N1 avian flu) and it might become a "first line of defense" against bioterrorism. In the HIV study, the patient's viral load decreased 92% (102,759 iu/ml to 7,960 iu/ml) after receiving twelve Hemopurifier treatments thrice weekly for one month. What is also surprising is that the patient was NOT taking any antiviral drugs.. So, if this device was combined with medicine, it'll probably be even more effective especially when treating drug-resistant HIV.

Submission + - Canadian Cops won't target music/movie downloaders (torrentfreak.com)

rdoherty writes: Canadian police will stop targeting people who download copyrighted material for personal use. Polce will focus on organized crime and copyright theft that affects the health and safety of consumers instead of the cash flow of large corporations. It is inefficient to track down individuals who download music or movies off the Internet, and the police do not have the time nor the resources to go after filesharers.
