Submission + - Harry Potter Leak is Authentic! (No Spoilers Here)

CantSleepBusyReading writes: "Well, It seems that the leaked Harry Potter Pictures/Book is authentic! The New York Times (Which acquired an early copy legally) has compared the potential fake release with the book itself. The verdict? Its a keeper — the widely available and greatly discouraged leaked copy is not a fake.

Its good to know that I didn't just waste 8 hours reading it.

It is at http://www.galaxyzoo.org./ They need to do a basic categorisation job on a million gallaxies as a first step to further research. Submission + - ebay Car Thieves - My Truck Was Stolen (blogspot.com)

Ben Adams writes: "The man met me in person and provided his commercial drivers license shortly before loading up my truck and STEALING it. Detailed story at http://benadams.blogspot.com/ In a different life, cashier's checks were meant to substitute as real currency so that you didn't have to carry a large amount of cash around. At the end of the day — you will occasionally have to ask yourself if you can trust your fellow man or not. In this case, I did. As you will see, it was a mistake."

Submission + - Obama Campaign Spamming

An anonymous reader writes: "In addition to all the other disreputable things Barack Hussein Obama's campaign is doing (lying about his positions, hiding his past, stealing myspace pages and trying to demonize former supporters they abused) they've sunk to an all-time new low; they're spamming.

The past couple weeks, I noticed "announcements" from Hussein Obama's campaign flowing into my spam traps. One titled "Taking it to the Streets" showed up both in my inbox, and in three of my spam traps. Sender was "Barack Obama info@barackobama.com", mailer was MTA2.Bluestatedigital.com — definitely the work of the Hussein Obama campaign. I offered him the benefit of the doubt; followed the unsubscribe links, made sure each relevant address was removed, called the campaign to warn them about this kind of behavior. End result? NONE of the addresses are removed from Hussein Obama's email lists. I got their "Not playing by the rules" spam yesterday, with the header indicating it's from David Plouffe (but again at info@barackobama.com and the same mailer) this time.

What do you do when a political asshole spams you and won't stop? Why do they think they can get away with it?"

And why do Slashdot's editors want to hide this story? Do they secretly support him spamming because they want him to win?

Submission + - Gonzales, "attempted" piracy, and Inslaw/P

Christopher Knight writes: "If Attorney General Alberto Gonzales wants to impose sentences of life in prison for software piracy, then what about his own Justice Department's continued use of the PROMIS software, when it was proven a number of times in court that this was definitely a case of software piracy by the federal government? To this day, Inslaw hasn't been paid anything for Justice, the FBI, and apparently the CIA hijacking its software without compensation. Talk about chutzpah!"

Submission + - SCO to be delisted from Nasdaq

Frosty Piss writes: "SCO has six months to get its share price trading above $1 for a sustained period or it will be delisted from the Nasdaq stock exchange. SCO has been trading below $1 since March 13. It now has until October 22 to get above $1 for 10 consecutive days, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing. SCO's share price plunged below $1 in December 2006 after US District Judge Dale Kimball affirmed an earlier ruling limiting the SCO's claims against IBM to just 106 items of evidence. Just days later Novell filed a request for a partial summary judgment that could cripple SCO's already diminished breach of contract and copyright case against IBM. The company has avoided delisting once before, but perhaps SCO's days are numbered."

Warner Brothers Pulls Canadian Previews 273

A number of readers let us know that Reuters and others are reporting that Warner Brothers is canceling movie previews in Canadian theaters, starting with Oceans Thirteen. A Warner VP said, "Within the first week of a film's release, you can almost be certain that somewhere out there a Canadian copy will show up." Recently, the International Intellectual Property Association placed Canada on its Priority Watch List, along with the likes of Argentina, China, Russia, Turkey, and Venezuela. This community knows, thanks to Michael Geist, that the claim is mostly ficiton.
